I currently have Roon running on this box under DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 4. I’ve had no issues.
Has anyone upgraded to DSM 7.4 without breaking Roon? Not sure I want to be a guinea pig for this but should I be moving to Docker? Will I break the RoonOnNAS installation if I move to 7.4? It’s one way only.
From some support comments I read that they may not care too much about roonOnNAS natively running, without Docker, since core Linux libraries on such NAS OSs are known to be rather outdated, esp. with QNAP. And subtle changes in DSM updates may bring third-party apps into trouble as well.
So, be careful with any upcoming roon server update and monitor comments here. Wait at least a month or so before updating the server checking for known issues. A major update in a few years may finally brick our installations as well in case there’s no matching DSM update available.
Let’s hope Docker will still be an option, then.
For the recent major update the info regarding the library thingy came a bit too late for some nervous customers and they updated blindly.
I moved away from QNAP a couple of years ago after some disasters and totally inadequate support. Glad I did. The Synology has performed very well indeed. I’ve added a 2.5gb network card and have 20gb of memory and it’s very speedy and stable.
After the Roon overhaul announcement I feared the worst but have had no issues at all but only time will tell.
