RoonServer failing to start on Windows 10/11 after build 1272 update [Roon Investigating, workaround in thread]

Happened to me too. Same exception code and exception info, but I’m on Win 10. I think windows did an automatic update so tried to load previous restore point, but it didn’t help.

OK, tried a reinstall of Roon Server to no avail, so I uninstalled completely (Application and DB/Settings) and restored from a backup, and everything is working now.

I’m guessing some sort of dynamic registration that got broken on Patch Tuesday that required a reinstall for some reason.

Same here as well with Roonserver.exe. This happened after patching my W11 system after patch Tuesday. If I check the application eventvwr I’m seeing a KERNELBASE.dll error and an .NET error as well. All my .NET instances are up to date and have been reinstalled to be on the safe side, same goes for the Roonserver install.

Same sh*t with windows 10 today! Yesterday server was working fine, please, fix this app finally! A lot of free software is much more stable, compared to this pretty expensive application!

Reinstall of server app with last version from download section solves the problem (as previous time 1 year ago) but it is really annoying!

Same here on Windows 11 Pro - 22H2 - Build 22621.1702.
Latest Windows update: KB5026372 (and KB890830).

Roon Server won’t start for me on Windows 11 either. … (Fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling RoonServer. No need to delete the database)

Reinstall worked fine for me too. Thanks!

Solution: delete RoonServer app (application files only) and install latest version.

Confirmed, uninstall Roon Server (Application only), reinstall, all good. Win 11 22H2, stopped functioning after reboot from patch Tuesday.

Hi All,

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention, I have notified the team and we are looking into this, we will update everyone once we have more information.

In the meantime, it sounds like doing a reinstall of the RoonServer Application Files (while leaving the Settings and Databases unchecked) allows RoonServer to start again.

You can give this suggestion a try from your Windows Apps & Features menu:

I’m having an issue that seems very similar, except its on the client side, so no Roon server running on this device. The Roon server is running on another Windows machine which has not yet downloaded the patch. Linux and Sonos clients running without issue.

Everything worked fine until the windows patch.

Found this thread when wondering why Roon Server wouldn’t start.

Win10
Windows update run earlier this week.
today:-

Faulting application name: RoonServer.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x64372093
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.19041.2913, time stamp: 0xa1c3e870

Faulting application start time: 0x01d985242771f37b
Faulting application path: C:\Users\htpc\AppData\Local\RoonServer\Application\RoonServer.exe

downloaded RoonServerInstaller64.exe and installed (didn’t do uninstall first).
Roon then performed database update
then I needed to update client
now all working again thankfully (it’s friday night man!)

I reinstalled Server and the PC app using the latest downloads without first uninstalling anything and that worked fine for me.

PC App not starting after the 1272 update… tried everything

Same issue here, on Win10. Looks like on Win 10 there is no option to reinstall just the application files, but I’ll download the installer and try. Hope I won’t loose my database, because I have no backup I think. Shouldn’t stuff like this be picked up in beta testing?

I just downloaded Roonserver exe file again from website and hit ‘install’’. That was all it needed in my case.

Is there any solution here how to use the 1272 on Win10? Before the update to 1272 everything was working. I have a lifetime license and would want to continue using Roon software please. It will be fair if Roon Team finally find and post a solution or give a possibility to download previous working version before the update.

Thanks
