Re-download the correct image for your Raspberry Pi; this should be the XZ compressed variant. Then try again with Etcher.
Thanks, I’ll try that.

Failed I’m afraid.
Please share a screenshot of the message you see.

Unfortunately, the image didn’t upload. Please follow these instructions.
When you save the file, right click on the link and select save to… Save the file to your Downloads folder.
Then try running Etcher again, which should prompt you for your admin password.
There are two different downloads for each version, one is compressed (XZ) and the other one is not compressed (bin)
If you download the XZ file you should decompress (right click and decompress) it before using Etcher.
Thanks I’ll try that tonight

Are you on Windows or Mac OS?
Etcher will extract the archive automatically, so this step is unnecessary.
The OP is using macOS.
The issue relates to permissions, and it looks like the file is in temporary space. Saving to the users’s Downloads folder should resolve this.
Never worked reliabily on my Mac and always have to decompress before, ApplePiBaker works fine instead
Very frustrating as nothing seems to work including using a fresh SanDisk. Surely I’m not the only Mac user trying to do this.
Same error as in your first post?
How are you installing Balena Etcher on your Mac?
As per a previous reply, your issue is that Balena Etcher does not have permission to open the temporary download file. macOS by default restricts the folders an application can access for security reasons. As per the screenshot, /var is a system folder, and most user applications should not have write access, which is what would be needed in order to decompress the image file prior to Etcher writing to SD Card)
Rather than trying to download and open the file directly in Etcher, you need to first download the image and save to your downloads folder. If you’ve somehow set things so that the download automatically opens Etcher, right click (or control-click) and “Download linked file as” & save the file to your downloads folder. When that has finished, open Etcher and select the file you saved to your downloads folder.
I’m on macOS and never had an issue with Etcher.
Thanks when downloaded it goes directly to the downloads. I load it onto Etcher and the Sandisk but then fails to load.
Yes all installed.
is it possible you’re using a user account that doesn’t have admin permissions?
