RoPieee now experiencing audio drop outs - glitches / Predominantly with hi res audio

RoPieee HQ unique identifier : 3a85474fafd5db06

Ras Pi 4 / 8 MB - hardwired 1GB - USB DAC - 2024.10 (1840)

I have been running this same RoPieee setup for several years and never experienced a single issue until the last month. For the last year or so I’ve been running the Beta version without issue. Once this drop out issue started I switched back to the Stable release channel.

My dedicated Roon server environment has not changed in a LONG TIME. Roll your own Linux server for Roon (Slackware 15+, 16 GB RAM, AMD FX-8350, SSD system drive, “Music/data” drive Toshiba HDWR180) ,190,551 tracks.

Monitoring Roon logs, CPU utilization, memory utilization, etc during playback I don’t see any issues.

Playing to other Roon endpoints, that aren’t running RoPieee, I have no issues.

My audio environment has also not changed for a long time. Same RME ADI-2 DAC, etc.

I guess posting here to see if anyone else has reported a similiar issue. I can’t find the ghost in the machine. Network issues are not suspected. I’ve been a Network Engineer for almost 27 years and have a solid wired home environment that does not depend on WiFi for Roon.

Help!

So… to make sure I understand you correctly: you experienced drop outs with a beta build and therefore switched back to stable. Where everything is ok again? Or are you experiencing these dropouts also with stable?

Correct. Are both the Stable and Beta versions using the new kernel?

I’ve exhausted all other possibilities before posting here because I wasn’t wanting to blame RoPieee…now I’m grasping at straws.

No. Recently a new beta cycle started, so beta is (slightly) ahead of stable.

The only thing I haven’t tried is to replace the RasPi board. I do have another 4 laying around, but it only has 4 MB of RAM. Could be a failing USB interface in the Pi maybe?

No, I don’t think so. If stable works correctly for you, and beta not, it’s gotta be software.

This started about a month back … were they on the same cycle then? Preemptible kernel?

OH! No, sorry, if I gave that impression. I’m having the issue with both…though Stable seems not “as” affected.

Oh! ok, that changes things…

Nothing much changed, except on the wireless front.

Update …

I changed the Pi4 out with a different Pi4 that wasn’t in use. It was actually running an older version of Ropieee from early 2024. Initial playback it was even worse then the other Pi running the latest stable. I upgraded it, incrementally, to the latest stable then beta. Sometimes it will play 3 - 9 songs with no issue then all of a sudden BAM … dropouts, static, glitchy … tried various quality of tracks - mp3 128, flac 16/44, flac 24/192, DSD, etc…didn’t matter.

OK, so maybe the server is having issues…I created a new server on a better desktop this time running windows. Imported entire library in, from local disk on the windows machine, tried playback…same issue.

Changed ethernet cable to Ropieee. No change in the pops/glitches.

Changed USB cable Ropiee to DAC. No change in the pops/glitches.

Decided to get a Spotify premium account so I could test the Spotify connect feature of Ropieee ----- works flawlessly.

The fact that this literally came on overnight, i use Roon playback daily, and has not gone away after all the troubleshooting, etc is starting to lead me to believe this is an actual ROON problem not a Ropieee problem.

Unsure where to go from here. Guess I’ll open a support case.

Well, I had a similar issue with sound, installed an older working 2023xx ROPIEEE version and problems are gone. Not ideal I know…but works. My HOLO AUDIO RED uses a very old ROPIEEE version and that also works flawlessly too though…so why not use this?
I have some older versions if you need one uploaded for test…let me know!

This has little todo with RoPieee. Even with 16/44 the OP is hearing issues, except when using Spotify.
