RopieeXL -> PI2AES version 2 launching on May 15th, compatability?

Will RopieeXL receive an update to incorporate the new PI2AES v2 (HAT) launching on May 15th?

Thanks and all the best! =D

Edit: Added link and thanks!

AFAIK this HAT is software compatible with the original version, so this should work.

Thank you @spockfish

Iā€™ll let you know if I run into any issues once it comes in!

Thank you

On page 12 of the userā€™s guide of the PI2aes v2, it states to use HifiBerry Digi+ Pro driver for RasPi software.

To note.

Ok this I missed.

This means you can run it now while choosing the Hifiberry.
Iā€™ll add it to the next release which itā€™s own entry as well.

thanks

Hello,
just an update:

Just received the PI2AES v2 and got it installed.

tl;dr The ports on new HAT with RoPiee do not function.

I have the USB and HAT outputs in parallel, and the 5v connected to the HAT (powering the HAT/Pi). I have an audio sample playing through the DAC connected to the RasPi USB, and I have tried the digital coax and the tos link on the HAT. I have also tried multiple configs for HAT Type (PI2AES, Hifi Berry all versions).

I canā€™t seem to get any output to the speakers that are connected to the HAT ports (and yes the speakers work). My headphones through the RasPi-USB/DAC/AMP works with the same audio sample playing.

Any advice?

Was about to buy me one - very interesting to hear how this will be solvedā€¦!!

I suggest you follow the documentation from Pi2 Design and go with the HAT selection for the Hifiberry Digi+ Pro driver.

Can you do that and send me feedback afterwards?

Thanks

I tried everything under the sun. I tried all the HiFi Berry drivers, Force USB vol on/off, contacted Michael at PI2AES through a multi hour email chain. I tried flashing the RoPiee image found on the PI2AES site. None of this worked.

In order to get it to function, I had to flash the volumio image found on the PI2AES site. I am happy that I finally got the HAT to output the audio, after several hours of trouble shooting. Not real excited that I am forced to use Volumio at this time.

But again, can you send me feedback?

The Hifiberry Digi+ Pro driver with the latest version of RopieeeXL does not work.

Is that the feedback you are looking for?

No, as mentioned in my earlier post Iā€™d like to receive feedback from the RoPieee unit send to me.
That can be done from within the ā€˜advancedā€™ tab. It sends logs to me so I can have a look.

Thanks

Oh, I see. You want logs from the device itself. Sure, I can pull those for you. Allow me some time as I need to reflash the SD card with RoPieeXL and re-configure.

Hi,

Thanks for that.
You did not (try to) play something with Roon right?

The hardware is properly recognized. So ideally you play something (with Roon), only to the Pi2Aes (so no USB) and send me feedback again.

Thanks

You are welcome.

I am playing audio (44.1 khz) through foobar. The output from foobar being uPnP to the RasPi. This is over WiFi and/or network connection. There is no USB connection in the audio chain.

Yes, I was playing audio through foobar to the uPnP Pi2AES/RasPi output during the feedback sent. No audio is produced from the speakers, the seekbar is ā€œskippedā€ across, nor does the LED on the HAT come up that indicates that it is rendering the audio, when I try with RoPiee.

With the volumio image, the lights are on, and I have audio over toslink.

Please let me know what further feedback to send in.

Ok but:

If youā€™re using something else than Roon (UPnP), you need to configure UPnP. And thatā€™s not the case with your endpoint. So how do you play audio through the RoPieee unit?

You need to configure UpnP on the ā€˜servicesā€™ tab (set the output to HAT).

Solved=> Changing the output to HAT.

RoPieeXL w/ Driver HiFi Berry Digi+ Pro with Toslink, confirmed working with Pi2AES v2

Ah! That got it working!

It is working through toslink, but not through digital coax. I suspect I have a dead cable now and that may have thrown my trouble shooting for a loop. Another one is ordered and will report back on that functionality when that gets here.

Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for saving me from volumio!

Second cable tested on digital coax

No output from digital coax with identical setup, nothing has changed.

Update: Tested digital coax output from HAT to AV receiver (2 diffrent digital coax ports) with 2 different digital coax cables, does not work. Toslink to AV receiver does work.

Edit: Update

Update on coax connection

tldr; A replacement was sent, still exhibited same behavior. In order to run coax successfully, I installed a BNC (m) to RCA (f) adapter from the HAT to the coax input on my speakers/AV.

Another HAT was sent out and I was hoping maybe it was just a bad apple, but once I set the HAT up on a brand new RasPi, I was not getting any audio out of the speakers. I ended up ordering a toslink to coax converter that was powered. I then ran HAT-> toslink out ā†’ Toslink/coax converter ā†’ powered speakers coax in, and I then heard audio output from the speakers. So I ensured it wasnā€™t a bad coax port on my speakers, and I also repeated the process with my AV to the same result.

I reported the results back to Pi2AES and what I was suggested the issue could be is that this HATā€™s coax output is 600 mW and that my speakers are expecting 1000 mW. I was pointed in the direction of the BNC to RCA adapter to run the coax cable. And that worked out for me. I donā€™t know enough about the intricacies of coax voltage to determine that validity, or wonder if it might be some driver issue. But in any event, it is working, albeit in a roundabout fashion.

With all that being said, the sound is amazing. And this HAT w/RoPieeXL will bring life to any sized audio system. Thank you.

Cheers
