Router: Any Advantage of a better power supply?

One of those miracles: Ethernet gives you perfect galvanic isolation, Wifi even better  (no just the same) but the router power supply still makes a difference. Similar to differences in SQ depending on if power pols are made of wood vs concrete.

I think that you will hear a marked improvement to the sound of all your audio equipment is you change the color of all the arrows in your otherwise beautiful diagrams to black. Black is the absence of all color and who knows how much colorization the various colored arrows are adding to your system. Sure the diagrams will then be slightly harder to read but that is a small price to pay for cleaner and much less colored sound.

Remember the guiding principle of the audiophile: all things matter, no matter how small or unrelated they appear on the surface.

Great suggestion  But than the background has to be pink.

All the best

I just put a Furman 15A 8 Outlet Surge Suppressor with liner filtering between my UPS and my router/switch. I did it for 2 reasons. 1. UPSs are notoriously noisy and can cause damage to whatever is plugged into them. 2. The perception that my network signal will be cleaner, causing my music to sound better and my streaming teevee to look sharper.

Really? This is news to me. Can you provide some references so that I can look into this a bit more?

Edit: I found this one. Are there more?

Perceptions are important.

Yes, an iFi on the routermakes a big difference in SQ

Please clarify. What exactly is a BIG DIFFERENCE?

Hi Torben, I can confirm that if you can hear a difference by taking care of the Router and understand him as a Source. In here the relevant datas will be proceed. I spend a lot of time and money to test different settings by ear. Starting with the Fritzbox 7490, than improvement by the 7590. Adding the Sbooster was a smaller step forward. Changing the Router to a Lancom 1790 VA without internal WLAN Antenna was a bigger step forward. Adding a Progressive Audio Power Supply was amazing in my chain. Than changing the Telekom Telefon Port to a Telegärtner LAN Terminal, another small step forward. Putting in all Lan connections a galvanic isolation - another step. Changing all cables to OFC unshielded CAT5 cables brought me to the point that I am really satisfied. All subtile changes but worth to try. This is just based on my own experience.

I presume all of this effort is for local tracks only. Otherwise you would have to set off with a fleet of trucks filled with devices to upgrade the internet between you and the streaming service of choice to hear a difference

Go off- grid and build your own audio power supply completely isolated from that pesky, poisoned grid electricity. Takes a little Honda power generator, a rectifier, a large battery, an inverter and some good size separate wiring. And that is just the start for all good things to happen…

I remember reading about a chap in Japan who worked for pioneer or marantz, he hand soldered D alkaline battery cells up to provide the power for his hifi. (This was pre mainstream recharchables,) When they ran out juice he unsoldered them from the cages they were in and soldered in a new set.
If you aren’t putting in the effort, how will your system ever sound good…:kissing_closed_eyes:

@ged_hickman & @KMM - Please, let’s have a factual dialog.

Thanks

I think pointing out that applying extraordinary measures to the last two metres of a chain being completely meaningless if the file has arrived via the horrors of commercial data centers is very much factual and to the point.

What @ged_hickman1 said. I would add that sighted tests that proclaim “big SQ improvements” cannot be called factual.

Ah, so presumably you measured at each step to verify that it actually made a difference! Otherwise, you would have been just noodling around, not testing anything. Could you share those measurements with the rest of us?

Crazy, I’ll give you. But all matters – that’s still just philosophy and opinion at this point. I’ve still seen no evidence to back up that point of view, while there’s plenty to support the contrary opinion, even aside from the common-sense reasoning that Ged has provided.

Here is the challenge (once more):

Can you or can you not identify a power supply tweaked router in a blind test??

As the answer most certainly will be ‚no‘ the perception of an improved SQ is pure self-delusion.

However - should you be able to surprise me (let’s say 9/10 tests identified correct) pls let me know.

Yes, let us do that. Instead of impressions, mythologies, and opinions masquerading as facts.

Upgraded the power supply on my router and now not only can I clearly hear the famous creaking of the piano bench during the last chord on the Beatles “A Day In The Life” (4:22 → 4:55) but I can tell you with a very, very high degree of certainty that there were eight pieces of sheet music in the piano bench and that the one down had a few handwritten notations in it made by a Cross pen. Incredible what ultra clean power can reveal!!!

Hi Torben,

please PM me, this thread contains too much noise.

It’s not worth it.

Cheers!

Nothing a good sbooster PS couldn’t take care of, isn’t it…
