Showing (off) your Motorcars

For a brief period Holley made a three-barrel…it was important in the day to boast of the cfm of your carburetor. Those were fun times…now I want kids off my lawn.

That conjures images of Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino all day long

Yes, that was my intent but also while I terrorized neighbors with my cars as a teen…I now understand how noxious it was for them…while essential for me.

I had a 73 Plymouth Duster with a 340 and open pipes at the grand age of 18.

I used to start it at 7am ready for drive to work leaving it lumpy idling in front of my house for a good twenty minutes.

I thought it was funny at the time but I’m pretty sure none of the neighbors did

68 1/2 GTO Ram Air II (not III or IV), one of 500 made. Close ratio 4-speed and 4.30 rear end. Created misery for our neighbors. Importantly, it was a terrible car. Threw a rod three times in the first 6k miles at low rpm, also very difficult to idle.

Reminds me that my first real car, after getting out of the army, was a 6 year old lightly modified Pontiac GTO 389. I drove it into the ground, but it was probably my favorite car.

So next one was a used, slightly more modified 69 Plymouth GTX 440. The only street race my GTO ever lost was to a GTX when I ran out of gearing on the freeway.

I used to drink a bit, and drive a lot in my early 20’s. After that was when I really got into motorcycles because I couldn’t afford to insure a car (which was mandatory in my case) after 29 speeding tickets in a short period of time. I feel there was a great deal of luck that I lived through it. Now I drive like a (sober) old man, except on the motorcycle where I drive like a (sober) young man.

I bought one of the first (389) ‘64 GTOs. It was, even with Isky Polylocks only to run from 5400 to 5600 rpm before valve float.’ But I consistently wound to 6200-6400 with no problem, and it broke loose the tires when the outboard carbs (tri-power) opened. Since this was illogical, I replaced the one piece Sun tach with a two piece. Same thing. Made no sense.

'In 1966, I sold it to buy my second ('a '66) GTO. The mechanic on my second GTO approached me in the service area, told me that he had bought my former GTO but had engine trouble and tried to replace the pistons, only to discover that my '389 '64 GTO was, in fact, a 421 SD engine that someone on the assembly line had swapped for the 389.

Never had a Goat but was heavily into Mopar for a while.

69 Roadrunner, Sublime Green, 383 6 pack, show winner and street terror.

69 GTX fully built 440 6 pack, destroyed first the 727 trans then the rearend within 6 months.

73 Challenger fully restored with a radical built 340 making North of 450hp, a true screamer. Not that much fun on the road tbh.

Then moved into various LS powered classics.

67 Camaro with LS1.

69 Chevelle with LS2.

64 Belair wagon with LS6. Probably my most fun car, massively long tank of a vehicle that twisted the chassis and lifted the front left under full launch.

Remember leaving a 911 for dead at the lights…until the first bend of course

My dad bought me one of these for my 16th birthday in 1963. It was a 390 automatic with 4 barrel. New 1963 1/2 Galaxie 500 XL Convertible, white with black top and white interior. Same as picture with wire wheel covers and fender skirts.

Very nice.

I might have got a 45rpm record for my 16th birthday .

I did own 64 Galaxy 2 door hardtop with 390 and 4 speed stick. That was a lot of fun.

Then the guy who I bought it from died of cancer and his brother begged me to sell him the car back so he could restore it in his brother’s memory.

I agreed.

FWIW…the Ramcharger begiinning with the 413…through the 426 “wedge” and then the Hemi.

Ramcharger…then referred to as the “Goats”…Ram…Goat…a bit obvious.

But when the GTO, nomenclature “borrowed” from Ferrari, began to fade, people who missed that generation, referred back to the GTO, inaccurately as “goat”.

DeLorean conceived of the GTO and later sent his life up his nose. Tragic.

Well I had to work on the electric choke Saturday as it was not engaging enough to work correctly.
That is when I discovered it is not a Holley…lol.
Actually something I had never heard of.

Brawler
Apparently built by Quick Fuel and built in the USA.
770cfm with electric secondary and choke.
It’s actually a thing of beauty on its own.

It is much like a Strat clone….not a Holley but impressively similar in design snd implementation. I would have assumed 780 cfm. Thank you for sharing.

Sorry…typo.

770 it should say.
