So, I finally caved…

@RBM in the end I caved too and ordered both the display and (black) case for a (now) spare Pi 3B :slightly_smiling_face:
intention is to use it the same way you are doing (standalone Roon display via wi-fi)

question: so… I set up the thing using a wired connection then I do enable wi-fi, right?

thanks

Mine is up and running. I have been watching Ropieee for a while and have held back because while all of the dev work goes into the Pi, others like Odroid C2 are technically better on paper. But the C2 is still running an elderly Kernel and doesn’t attract a fraction of the support the Pi does so I am now running a screen, black case and 3B+. I have some noise at higher rates which I want to investigate but I want to mate this via the yet to be born Apple Pi DAC into my balanced headphone rig. I am hoping it will be a great combo. But right now it’ll go to my Meridian E2 then single ended to my headphone amplifier.

I just took a look at the signal path and it says Low Quality. So it’s not lossless? Do I have something configured wrong?

Yes and yes: boot and config with a wired connection, setup WiFi afterwards.

Hard to tell without seeing your path John – can you post a screendump?

Here is what I see:

That signal path is ‘Low Quality’ because the source file is: you’re playing an MP3.

I would be LQ no matter what output device you use.

Duh I should have seen that. Thanks. I just switched to a DSD file and it is Lossless. I always say that the problem is usually between the keyboard and the back of the chair.

Does anybody know of a case that could house a pi, a hat and the touchscreen?

I think it’s best to look at ‘open-back’ cases, as every HAT would require specific cut-outs. Something like this, perhaps?

@wizardofoz is herding a flock of Ropieee/Screen based endpoints – he may have some suggestions as weel.

Check put the SmartiPi touch case it has various options you can choose from.
I have mine mounted to a monitor stand.

I have three different monitor cases in use (no HAT on any of the monitors, as I separate the endpoints from the displays), and I have been tracking temperature for all of my RoPieee devices. The open back design one is the coolest of the monitors by far (by about 5 degrees C).

Thanks, guys, for pointing me in the right direction.

How did you manage to do this? Did you configure it as a remote?

After enabling the extension in Roon, all you need to do is to set the zone you want to display in Ropieee’s web config page – it works independently from Roon Bridge as endpoint.

If there is no hat or dac on the usb then it won’t show up as a bridge endpoint…so just a display. I love the clock when it’s not playing too.

I plan to use as spare pi to feed an active speaker via the headphone out (sound quality is not a concern here), and incorporate a display in this setup. Is this possible with Ropieee, or would I need a hat to feed the speaker?
@spokfish

The onboard audio of the Pi is disabled in Ropieee and not selectable as output. For a good reason too: it is really, really bad.

Look for a nice HAT. If SQ is not important, any basic HifiBerry, IQAudio or Allo DAC will do.

Thanks, @RBM.
Last couple of questions, will the display work with a hat, and how much power would I need to feed the pi in order to power a hat an the touchscreen?

There is a list of compatible HATs on the Ropieee website.

Brilliant, thank you! Looks like I can start tinkering in the coming days. Three pies in my home network just aren’t enough… :sunglasses:
