Did I read Gustavo Santaolalla & game soundtracks?

Gustavo Santaolalla
The Last Of Us (2013)

At first, you might think you were listening to a Ry Cooder type soundtrack (namely Paris Texas) & slowly no…it’s a combination of Ry Cooder & Ennio, until you recognise it’s neither and it’s original Gustavo. Given there are 30 short tracks here you’d think it would sound disjointed and merely act as an adjunct to the game. However, it does stand alone. As per the allmusic review:

all killer no filler.

Gustavo Santaolalla/Mac Quale
The Last Of Us Vol. 2 (2020)

There’s way more 'electronics’ on this release (perhaps due to Mcquale - whoever he is) & overall I find it mostly has a darker tone. Not many reviews on this yet, seems to currently have a metacritic score of 83 at the moment.

Robin Guthrie & Harold Budd
Mysterious Skin (2005)

Solid yes, but nothing overly that sets this out from the pack. Is it a worthy ambient listen? Sure, but I’m don’t it’s the kind of release that will see listeners returning for repeated listens, even with some fine lush guitar work from Guthrie.

Blue Velvet Revisited (2015)

Noirish style jazz & chamber atmospherics - fairy solid release capturing the spirit of the original movie. However, perhaps it’s missing that haunting allure in this documentary.

Les Baxter
Hell’s Belles (1969)

Prop to Les Baxter for his versatility!

Unlike his other soundtracks posted here (House of Usher & Dunwich Horror) or his 50’s to 60’s lounge/exotica albums, here we delve into funky psychedelica on this biker flick. The few vocal tracks feel less essential but the album is highlighted by some great breakbeat tracks & fuzzy psychedlic guitar.

A typically solid Giallo soundtrack from Bruno.

Nina Rota
Death on the Nile (1978)

It’s no Godfather or even Boccaccio '70, but it’s still fairly solid.

Ennio Morricone
Faccia a Faccia (1967)

This followed the supreme The Big Gundown a year before, under the direction of Sergio Sollima. There are two main themes here, both typical Morricone western pieces. The titular main theme is fairly explosive, yet not as memorable as Morricone’s iconic themes in this genre. The most enjoyable are those when Edda Dell’Orso joins in!

Fun Game. I like collecting game soundtracks. I’ve had people turn their noses up on them. And then I play them the Cupheads soundtrack and blow their minds.

Ennio Morricone
Veruschka (1971)

Soundtrack to the documentary about the ‘first-ever’ supermodel. This is an excellent example of mostly Euro swinging Morricone (exotica), along with some experimental sounds, with the ever present & iconic ‘mysterious’ Edda Dell’Orso on vocals.
