No one is going to try to hack your Roon Core and computer viruses aren’t just floating around in cyberspace waiting to somehow stumble onto your computer. If you are using it solely as a Core the latter won’t be a worry.
Maybe a clean (total wipe) system install will help. If your computer is crashing and BSODing, it sounds like this is an issue outside of Roon. After that, Try disconnecting your HDMI as we recommended, turn off the Norton, and let us know if that changes anything?
Can I do that after I’ve imported, or must I do that before? (Meaning I would have to re-import.) If I flick that switch, does that mean that genre will blank on import and that I would have to manually add them all? And how does one delete everything already imported? I am a long-time user of JRiver and have set up my library so that I never have to key in a search, and JRiver does allow changing metadata after import. However, it has crapped out on me recently with regard to multi-channel playback and at times cannot recognize the Trinnov. (And, yes, it might be the computer, which has led me to reexamine its continued use.) That’s why I looked into Roon, but it has proven to be confusing as . . .
Questions on the Nucleus: Is it capable of playing all multi-channel .dsf and .wav files, or would I need a Nucleus+ for that? Could I use ethernet to connect to my Trinnov Altitude 16 and connect HDMI to the monitor so I can see what I am doing? Or would I even need to do that?
Yes, you can change this setting anytime. Once changed, roon will re-read your files and update things, but in my case that doesn’t take very long (maybe a few minutes for about 130,000 local files).
