Stopping Roon Remotely

Is there anyway to stop Roon/Tidal playback remotely?

I continually leave Tiday playing through Roon on my home system, and then Tidal stops playing in the car saying ‘it is playing on Roon’.

Roon Arc dosent seem to ever connect for me, so thats not an option even if it does have a function to do this.

Is there any other ways of doing it?

Don’t use Roon arc at home. Use Roon. Also, stop playing when not listening. Use Roon Arc in the car. It doesn’t matter if someone is using Roon at home.

I dont use Roon Arc, it dosent work.

I use Tidal through Roon.

I use Tidal in the car through Carplay.

I forget to turn Tidal/Roon off when not at home. No point telling me to remember, as I won’t.

My question is simple, is there a way of turning Roon off remotely ?

I use Splashtop. Simple answer.

I also stop Roon music when I walk out of my listening room. Nothing to forget.

Also, Roon Arc works perfectly for me and most Roon customers.

Some methods for your reference:

  1. VPN back to home network, use roon app to stop it.
  2. Use roon app with Tailscale or Zerotier.
  3. Install “Home assistant”(or buy one preinstalled device), control roon through its mobile app. You can also export roon control to Apple HomeKit.

What are you using as Roon Server? Can you use HomeKit or other home automation to set a geofence so that when you leave, it kills the Roon process or shuts down whatever machine is running it?

I feel like you’re not reading other people’s posts in this thread. I never said anything about cutting power. Killing processes and shutting down machines ≠ cutting power.

Did you consider upgrading Tidal to family account? It should be possible to use it simultaneously in 2 locations wirh such subscription.

I do already have a Tidal Family Account…I think to use this method I’d had to have one profile for the car and one profile for home which isn’t ideal as it won’t have all my playlists, search algorithm results etc.

Thanks @Jin-Bin_Yang

I will look in to HomeKit as I am using all Apple devices - phone, laptop and my tv has it installed.

Roon is installed on a Qnap server. Would this affect using HomeKit to install it?

That should make things easy as either via VPN or QTS´ remote access you could use the Qmanager app and its app center section to stop and restart the roon server app safely which is also stopping the local stream.

Sorry, I thought this would enable you to have several streams on one profile simultaneously as it is the case with Qobuz.

Unfortunately, having tried this, it dosent seem to want to connect over 4G, any ideas if this is fixable?

Seems like I’m not the first complainer of this! but alas no solution either :frowning:

You mean QManager does completely refuse to connect to your NAS outside of your LAN?

If this is the case and you do not use a VPN to be virtually on that particular network, you might need to alter the necessary settings to make Qnap´s remote access working:

  • register both the Qmanager app and the NAS for the same Qnap ID and login as admin
  • activate remote access on the NAS (if I remember it correctly setting it up as a cloud storage or activating DDNS is sufficient, no additional VPN client required)
  • make sure the NAS can independently open ports to the internet and is not restricted by any router

I did this some time ago mainly for using the cloud services and remote Qmanager access is very convenient doing exactly what you want it to do, without any additional VPN installed. When I was out of the house an hour ago I made a quick check and found it to be working from mobile network while I could see on ARC how the roon server was disappearing and appearing again:

As you see I am using the app center of Qmanager enabling me to stop and restart any app on the NAS from afar. This app is highly recommended and one of the reasons why I would always prefer a Qnap NAS over a ROCK server.

You may try to use a Raspberry Pi or QNAP virtual machine to install Home assistant first.

I will write a step by step tutorial for you later. (assuming your Home assistant is ready)

IN ADDITION, you MUST have at least an AppleTv, or a HomePod at home as a control center.

Thats really kind of you, thank you…but I dont want to add another box like a RPI. I also don’t know what you mean as a ‘control centre’ , I have AppleTV built into my tv so no longer have a seperate box, nor do I have any HomePods etc.

Thanks for this.

Ok, so I need to find how to open ports and activate remote access on the NAS.

I am far too old for this

I think what you have is a smartTV with a pre-installed AppleTV “app” for you. If that’s true, you will not be able to use HomeKit devices in your home, including Home assistant exported ones.

QNAP has cloud services that doesn’t need any port opening to internet. You may try that way.

What is myQNAPcloud Link?

No, opening ports or the NAS establishing remote connection does not require any action from your side.

The only thing necessary is logging in with your qnap ID and hitting a checkbox for cloud/DDNS access. It is really easy once you find the right place in QTS admin tool. Will send you a screenshot.

Just to say that @Arindal spent some time with me fixing my Qnap so that I could remote connect through my iPhone, and now everything is working and I can log in and stop the Roon server through my phone, which is exactly what I needed.

Huge thankyou for @Arindal for taking the time to walk me through stuff, big kudos

I would also very much appreciate Tidal to play off its app when i am away from home AND play at home for my through Roon for my family, at the same time. Creating a new Tidal profile will not work for me.

It is quite frustrating (and a little dangerous) to be listening in the car, have the music stop, open the phone, open the app and press play, and repeat like every 10m…

To further complicate, i want a fix that does not require me to set up any additional software or VPNs.
