I’m still new to Roon and I’m still learning the genre logic in this program.
Today I wanted to explore some Georgian music after my recent visit to the country. Upon searching in genres international - Central/West Asian Traditions - Georgian, there were no results. Only a ‘start radio’ button and radio stations below:
However, I did manage to find a band from Georgia via means other than Roon. And it’s strange that although one of their albums has the genre tags mentioned above, still nothing appears in the genre’s page:
This isn’t the first time I come across this. Is there any logic in it? Is it a problem or something that I can do something about in settings?
Thanks,
John
Yes, those are suggestions/recommendations by Roon and these can be shown, but which ones are, if any, depends on Roon’s suggestion algorithm. It doesn’t comprehensively list all albums/artists that belong to a genre. There will be more suggestions for Country than for a more niche genre like Georgian.
However, specific albums or artists are only shown if they are in your Roon library.
From my phone - I have no Georgian artists/albums in the library and the only suggestion is a radio station:
I understand that not all artists of a genre are or should be displayed under a genre/subgenre. But that’s different to having NO artist or album at all under a subgenre. It renders the ability to access a specific genre under the ‘genres’ tab pointless, isn’t it? At least for exploring new music.
I do understand that artists will show under a genre/subgenre once I add them in my library, but that’s not the point in my case. As in mycase I was trying to explore musics rather than browse my library.
In practice, how would you go about exploring new musics? Musics that as indeed a bit niche. As I said, I’m new to Roon, so perhaps I’m not using it right. If you were in the mood of listening to how Georgian music sounds like, how would you do it through Roon?
You asked if there is any logic in what you see, and I’m just telling you how it is. I’m not responsible for it or saying that it’s perfect.
There are many things in Roon that only work for in-library items, and it’s not always obvious which ones those are, while other things work regardless of whether they are in the library or not. Generally, Roon Labs is working towards making more things available for non-library items, but there are architectural, resource, and performance considerations.
