Recently my Nuc roon server ran out of memory (16GB) forcing me to either upgrade the memory or move to a differnent server. Since I operate an Apple environment I decided to migrate to a mac mini. However, Minis are at the end of life and a new model is coming in the fall.
As a temporary measure I migrated to an old Intel based MacPro running Tahoe.
There seems no issue. Memory usage seem low, see activity moniter screen below.
My question is does anyone have experience with configuring a dedicated MacMini server for a very Large Roon DataBase (500,000+ tracks)? New M silicon for performance. What about memory. All music files are external.
I am planning to acquire a new Mac Mini (M5 or M6) in the fall to be sure of the most powerful single CPU. It is a shame Roon Server does not take advantage of multiple processor which most moder systems have.
From what I understand, MacOS pages memory to it’s SSD when required vs Rock which has no such capability and only relies on RAM.
The RoonAppliance in my case Real Memory Size → 9.5 GB and Virtual Memory Size → 47.78 GB. Total Memory for the system is 25 GB on a machine with 48GB. Hopefully 24 or 32 GB will be sufficient on a dedicated Roon Server Mac with very little other apps.
Question, never considered this before, but can you run ROCK on an Intel based MacMini?
Will it boot as a x86 machine?
It would be interesting if there was a port of RoonOS to Apple silicon as a headless app, but this is probably not possible without Apple’s help/support.
