Roon runs on a Synology NAS latest DSM software with audio station installed. External access to the NAS is set up.
Installed Audio Station app on my iOS 18.1.1 iPhone and looged into audio station for remote access to my library. Hooked up carplay and to my surprise, audio station shows up on the carplay list of compatible apps. And it actually works.
Cool, no more messing with ARC. Just wanted to share that with the niche in the in niche people running Roon on a NAS.
Just curious does the Synology solution give you access to your entire music catalog including playlists, artists, albums, and tracks?
Roon Arc and/or CarPlay have improved recently where I can see more of my catalog than the previous limitations. My understanding is that the limitation was within CarPlay and how music it allowed Arc to cache in for you to view.
@John_Klimaszewski , no Audio Station doesn’t give you access to anything other than your local files, listed alphabetically (you can sort). ARC is far superior, offering the ability to stream files that Audio Station chokes on. Nothing against this post; I used Audio Station frequently when I had access to WiFi. But now I’ve removed it now, and rely solely on ARC with all the features ARC offers. Cheers.
I stopped using ARC after it deleted my downloads for the 3rd time - this has also happened to friends. I now use the native streaming apps + audio station and I get by.
@Ciaran_Henry , agreed about the downloads. I no longer download with ARC… it’s just a waste of time. I recently bought a Lifetime Subscription for Plex, to solve the elimination of Video Station. I haven’t tried it with audio yet, but I understand it works pretty well. For now, I’ll stick with ARC, and hope I always have a connection to Server.
My primary goal was to have hassle-free access to my locally stored library. Playlists are on my Tidal sub available on carplay. Interestingly enough, the connection to my home servers appears to be more stable compared to Tidal.
Audio station does not appear on Apple’s official car play compatible apps list. Dunno what’s up with that.
I want to say that PlexAmp cannot read/play back all high resolution content (e.g., some DSD) perfectly, and if you have a lot of high resolution content, your album and track count in PlexAmp will not be the same as in Roon.
However, my Roon and Synology Audio Station track and album counts match perfectly:
