Hi
I had a similar wifi problem with almost the same setup:
Linn majik dsm 1st floor
Synology Nas with flac files and itunes server floor 0
Connection through powerline adapters
The system had dropouts as well and only worked during night! I got rid of powerline and now use a wlan repeater of the same make as my internet router!
Perhaps that can be a work around if your router is not too far away …
I use roon core on pc now and am quite happy with functionality and user interface.
I am considering an upgrade to my setup too. So I was wondering if anyone has experience with innuos zenith as a library server? Can run roon core too
Cheers
Chris
Hi,
Just got a lifetime membership of Roon and was thinking along the same lines as my core is on an Asus VivoMini Windows 10 machine in the spare bedroom. The VivoMini is connected via a Digital coax to my Graham Slee Majestic DAC and at the moment I am streaming to a remote on my MacBook Air and via Airplay to my ATV 4K in the front room. As my router is situated in the front room was thinking of the Zen Mini mainly because my library is not that big about 150Gb at the moment and also to be honest although I could afford something more expensive just seems like overkill to spend £1500 plus in my situation. May give Innuos a call to have a chat and ask a few questions as their website states a 30 day no quibble returns policy. The one big advantage innuos has over the Nucleus is they come pre installed with hard drives although the nucleus would probably be more seamless setting up!. A lot of money to shell out and need to get it right first time.
Why not a NUC/ROCK if cost is a limitation for Nucleus?
Hans has some primers on going ROCK that are pretty easy to follow.
Interesting that you should mention Hans as i am a subscriber to he’s channel. Find him informative and also talks in plain English. Did watch he’s three videos going through the installation procedure and was fine until he mentioned updating the BIOS and Codecs and that’s where my heart sunk as you see i am one of those people that if it can go wrong it probably will. So in light of that i have bitten the bullet and ordered a Nucleus. All i need to do now is read the manual and installation procedure several times. Hans did mention that the Roon core must be installed on an SSD otherwise the performance could be slow and sluggish. That convinced me not to buy a server installed with a spinner.
The problem with repeaters, as opposed to an access point genned as an extender, is that the bandwidth is cut in half, which may be a problem for Roon transport. However, a repeater is the only option for someone who can’t run cable, because an extender needs to be hard wired (I think).
great advice and conversation, thanks everyone!
I’ve cancelled my roon sub and gave them some feedback - they were very positive and offered me a further trial once I have got my hardware set up.
very tempted to NUC/Rock and agree that Hans Beekhuyzen channel is great - tho not so sure about plain English!! I’m a former engineer and don’t find it so easy to follow at times.
meantime, happy rooning everyone, I remain stuck with Linn Kazoo meantime…
