Looking for a dedicated roon remote with minimal other usage (kindle, podcasts, etc.) Considering Fire HD 8 plus for wireless (charge while at my desk all day and then bring downstairs in the evening). HD 10 (bigger, but then have to unplug and plug). Or regular iPad (already in the Apple ecosystem).
is there concern that Amazon store won’t have the roon app at some point?
do fire tablets stop getting updates at some point? (Similar to Apple end of life cycle)
does the larger screen provide anything other than more viewing space?
At some point they will all probably stop getting updates (like my Pixel C).
The bigger screen means that at some point you get more information as it goes from “Phone” size to “Tablet” size and even to “laptop” size. Not sure where the cutoffs are but my 10" pixel C is pretty close to the same display as my PC display contents. Whereas my HD8 is more like my phone display. I also put the google app store on my HD8 so I can get the updates. If you are on apple ecosystem I would go with it? I am not on apple so not sure about the differences or issues. Either system has its share of issues.
I use an iPad Mini 6 and iPad 8th Gen. I’m considering replacing the Gen 8 with a Gen 10 for 5G cellular. I mostly use the tablets for their Verizon hotspot data plans when away from home. I use my Dell XPS 15 laptop as Roon control almost 100 percent.
What is your user experience like between the 2 sizes? Do you reach for one more often over the other? Does the iPad mini act as a “phone” or does it get the full “tablet” functionality?
I also have a RPi with remote and 7" display is the living room which actually gets the most use.
I usually use the tablet more when stationary, the phone is more convenient when moving around.
I use an IPAD Pro 12.9 that was a Christmas present from my wife in 2019 so I’d leave her IPAD alone for her to use.
Have it mounted on a table top stand and dedicated for entertainment system use, Roon remote and the audyssey editor app. The larger screen size works well with it stand mounted and sitting on the table next to my recliner. Easy to see and control the music without having it in my lap.
I’d like to have the newer faster version with the M4 chip and oled display mainly to speed up the audyssey app processing for Room correction. Perhaps a gift for Christmas and birthday combined if I’m really lucky.
I have a couple of Lenovo Tab M10 Plus (Gen 3) which have a decent display and performance for a console. Works well paired with B&O BT speaker for portability. The current generation is available in 8,9,11" it looks like.
There is some Android bloatware but it is not intrusive and can be disabled. I went this route as I felt performance/price/value is better then Amazon products. The software library on Amazon is not equivalent to Android, so ya, there is a concern there about available titles.
Maybe a little overthinking for a tablet that can be had at times under $90 – I paid $87 for my 2021 Fire 10HD. Delete or hide Amazon bloatware, side load Google Play store, Bob’s your uncle. Great as Roon Controller and magazine reader. If Amazon stops sending updates I’ll get another one.
First of all, I would definitely recommend a 9/10" tablet over the smaller size. Secondly, I bought a Fire HD 10 instead of an iPad because I don’t have other needs for a tablet and it is MUCH cheaper (especially during events like Prime Day, Black Friday, etc.). However, the Fire HD 10 frankly runs like crap and constantly reboots, the Roon app becomes unusable when left pinned half the time, etc. If it’s in your budget, I would get an iPad (or maybe a used one).
I carry mine thru the house so I use an iPad mini 5th gen and am very happy with it. I did try an Amazon tablet once but found it was unstable and big delays getting updates so I gave it away.
I have several Amazon Fire HD tablets (an HD 8, two HD 10s and one HD 11) and i have never experienced any of the issues that you are reporting. Oh well.
Unless you have found a setting to prevent the Fire OS from updating itself automatically, you have 100% experienced reboots, sorry. If you never experience Roon being unresponsive in a pinned state, then I wish I had your experience.
