Definitive mix?
Parsonsā Quad mix is really awesome, so is the early 2000s Guthrie 5.1
Thatās heresy
Psst.1973. Meddle was 1971
Meddle is FAB, innit?!
For my money, the 2016 DSOTM vinyl pressing is pretty ace. Itās dead quiet and sounds wonderful on my system.
My favorite digital version is the 2003 SACD stereo and 5.1 mix Caveat emptor: I havenāt listened closely to the most recent super deluxe thingies which may could be better.
A now, adding color, a group of anonymous Latin-American meat packing glitterati.
I wanted to clarify that Iām just as susceptible to purchasing multiple copies of favorite albums as anyone - god knows how many times Iāve upgraded certain Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, and Hendrix titles.
But after listening to the Floyd versions I mentioned above, I had to ask myself how much better those recordings could possibly sound without fiddling with the actual mix - which isnāt something Iād want.
The 2016 vinyl pressings The Floyd released sounded exceptional to me. New vinyl product varies wildly, but those were so well done that I grabbed Meddle, DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, and Animals and called off the search. (I do still need to find a 2016 version of The Wall)
I also picked up Record Store Day Mono versions of Pipers at the Gates of Dawn and Saucerful of Secrets and couldnāt be happier.
Chasing the Grail is big fun, but some of the newer reissue pressings are every bit as good as the earlier pressings - perhaps even better. When the band/artist actually cares about quality, the chances are good weāll get great-sounding platters. Itās why Iāll put down money for Neil Young vinyl without a second thought - he cares about the product, and the vinyl pressings prove it.
While not anywhere near as acceptable, I am again playing āFinal Cut.ā The lyrics are filled with conflict but interestingly unhealthy. Gilmourās guitar work is exceptional. In their time, this was an incredible group, and they were not derivative. I would like a 30th anniversary, but arguably I may have enough copies. Pink Floyd did not vanish from live concerts and retreat to studio gimmicks. I like their post-Waters concerts.
Anyone have input on the newer multichannel mixes? Honestly I canāt remember if Iāve listened to them.
I have the 50th anniversary Blue-Ray with ATMOS and DTS mixes (as well as 24/192 stereo mix) and also the same 2003 SACD multi stereo and channel version that @jamie mentioned above.
I enjoy them all, and it just depends on which one I chose to listen to at the time.
For me, āThe Final Cutā was the end of Pink Floyd - The Band. I enjoyed the album at the time, although I was aware that Waters was pushingā¦and gaining complete control. I did see both Floyd and Waters live after the split and enjoyed the gigs, but never got the same thrill from either the subsequent Pink Floyd/ Waters/ Gilmour, output. Perhaps because it was mainly a one person agenda, rather than band contributions and influence.
Some tremendous lyrics on āThe Final Cutā may dig out the vinyl tomorrow.
Can you post a photo of: ā50th anniversary Blue-Ray with ATMOS and DTS mixes (as well as 24/192 stereo mixā
I donāt have it to hand, but it is this one. I might as well have bought the deluxe box set as I ended up buying vinyl, CD and Blue-Ray
Sorry, I was really drunk at the timeā¦.
Cruisinā for a brusinā
This is really great for a tribute:
You could say itās Pink Floyd played with folk instrumentation, incl the horrid school pump organ on the cover!
The TV Series (Netflix) āDiplomatā) during and after a car explosion, plays a cut from Darkside of the Moon. It fits.
