frankly it surprises me how good can it sound. the room acoustics was horrible, very boomy - imagine an almost perfectly square room with zero treatment, you could almost touch the standing waves… but the iphone recording somehow cuts through that and sounds better than how I remember the live sound which is very unusual as normally nothing beats live music. I regret not recording more, as from my seat I could record without disturbing anyone. maybe next time I take better equipment with me and start a bootleg operation
Nice discovery from twitter this time, John Goldsby trio
John is a bass player with WDR Big Band, here in a trio with Billy Test and Hans Dekker
check out Charlie Parker’s Segment, one of the first tunes that got me into jazz…
Just heard the current Vijay Iyer Trio (Vijay Iyer, Linda May Han Oh, Tyshawn Sorey) at SFJAZZ. They were good recorded in “Uneasy” but this live performance was unreal, tunes turned inside out and melding with each other, a continuous intense flow, no slack at all, almost nonstop for 90 minutes. I’ve heard Iyer many times with different bands, multiple times with Sorey, but this set was very special. Linda Oh was on fire, some of the most dense and sustained double bass playing I’ve heard in a long time. They have been recording and the album may be out within the year. But really try to catch them live, it’s worth planning for it.
and here’s their album, on ECM
Very nice, mostly piano trio album - John Beasley, Christian McBride and Jeff Tain Watts
Try 4 a.m.
John Beasley is always good. Thanks for posting!
