Using a portable SSD to store music. Thoughts?

Hi guys

Guys just wanted to get your opinion on the storage we’re using a USB 3.1 SSD as my mvme is running out now

I’ve heard that they can disconnect periodically which would not be great because obviously I want to use roon through the mini PC which is hidden in my house

Any replies would be welcome

I specifically use a Samsung T5 portable SSD for all of my music files on my W11 Roon Server PC and have had no issues with it disconnecting ever. I’m not aware of this issue, but can provide at least the view that it works in my case.

In my previous setup, a NUC running Linux, I used a USB HDD for music, and never had an issue with disconnects.

I have been using more than 10 years … and never aware of this issue too … I use Mac instead of Windows PC

I use a Crucial X9 2TB Portable External SSD via USB connected to my NUC running ROCK. Never had any disconnect issues. Made replacing my Core much easier than having the library stored on an internal SSD.

Roon Server running on a MacBook Air M4 (macOS 2026) with a Samsung T7 2 TB SSD containing around 1,400 local albums. The setup has been completely stable — no disconnects, no performance degradation. The T7 remains mounted consistently, including after reboots and wake-from-sleep cycles. Connection via USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 2).

Note: Ensure that “Put external disks to sleep when possible” is disabled in macOS Energy Saver preferences to prevent idle disconnects.

ROCK Nuc with a 5TB HDD and never had an issue disconnecting. It will probably rescan library but this is it.

I have been using an external for a very long time with my NUC and there have been no issues at all. A internal hard drive can have issues just as easy as a external.

The key here is to always have a backup of your database and your library in the event it goes south.

I have also found that using a USB external instead of pulling from a NAS is a much faster user experience using Roon and then backing up everything to the NAS.

Unless you need SSD for silence , an HDD is just as good

I have a NUC/ROCK with both, a 4tb SSD Internal and a 5Tb USB HDD external, quite a price difference

Ok great. Clearly my mate was wrong. Thanks

I’m currently using a Samsung T7. No troubles whatsoever

I use a 2 tb SSD directly to my Nuc and it works perfectly. It is much faster than my QNAP NAS.

If your portable disk/ssd disconnects, it can be caused by lack of power thru the usb interface. I use a hub with a 4TB ssd and a 2TB m.2 nvme inside the hub and if I charge an iPhone/ipad maybe with another usb device plugged in, the disks in the hub could disconnect. I added a bigger power supply to the hub strictly for the usb interface and I have solved the disconnect issues

I use Sandisk Extreme 6TB SSD connected to a MAC Studio Max

No issues at all - more than 5000 albums.

I use a thunderbolt 4 enclosure with a 2TB nvme SSD on a m4 Mac mini without issues.
If there are disconnects it has either to do with power saving features of the OS (I use a app to disable that stuff) or the usb4 controller is overheating in the hub. (I had that happen with one of the cheap hubs that are not thunderbolt certified)

Thanks max. I’ve ordered one of Amazon so it’s arriving tomorrow I’ll see how it goes

Using SSD’s via USB for several years now. Very reliable and fast.

I know it’s not directly thread related, but, I’m interested in the app you’re referencing and would greatly appreciate a pm if you have a few moments in your day…thank you.

:desktop_computer: MacBook Air M4 – Stable Roon Core Setup (Clamshell Mode + Amphetamine + HDMI Dummy)

I’ve configured my MacBook Air M4 to run Roon automatically every day and it’s been rock-solid.
Here’s how the setup works:

:eight_o_clock: Automation
• macOS Schedule: automatic startup at 9:30 AM and sleep at 10:30 PM
• Amphetamine app keeps the system awake during that time window

:light_bulb: Clamshell Mode
• True lid-closed operation works perfectly by using an HDMI dummy plug
• I’m using:
• Satechi USB-C Multiport Adapter V3 (8K HDMI + 100 W PD)
• FUERAN HDMI 2.1 Dummy Plug (4K @ 120 Hz)

:floppy_disk: Storage & Power
• Samsung T7 SSD (2 TB) holds the Roon library
• Connected through the Satechi hub
• MacBook stays fully powered via the hub’s 100 W Power Delivery

:white_check_mark: Result
• MacBook runs in true clamshell mode (lid closed, display off)
• Roon Core and all endpoints stay active and visible on the network
• Stable, cool, and completely hands-off operation
