Using Roon as a Replacement for Sonos App for Device Control and Additional Features (ref#8IVWQD)

Could Roon be a replacement for the Sonos App to control all my Sonos devices.
Including sleep timer and alarm settings?

Yes

Yes

Not without the Roon Extension Manager I believe

Hello … Sorry for the “noob” question (this is actually my first one!)
After the release of the latest upgrade for the Sonos App there are lots of previously happy Sonos users looking for alternatives in both hardware & software - Good news for Roon & there are many references to it on the Sonos Forum
I know that I can download & try Roon on a free trial, but I wanted to ask what appears to me to be a simple question?
I have a Sonos soundbar (Beam) & their smaller sub-woofer (Sub-Mini) which are hooked up to my main TV - I also have (in separate rooms) 2x One speakers - I use these products in those rooms 95% of the time - If I want to watch a movie or concert Bluray, I hook up the 2x speakers as rear surrounds to the Beam & the system works in 5.1 and / or Dolby Atmos
Will I be able to do the same in Roon via software or would I need Roon hardware to do so?
Thank you … Paul

You would still need the Sonos app to pair devices into a cinema group.

Via Roon you can group different Sonos devices into one group but not as a cinema/5.1 group.

Also, Roon via Sonos Streaming will not replay in 5.1.

You’d need a TV with eARC with you Beam and then connect your Roon Server machine via HDMI to the TV and enable it in Roon Settings > audio page.

My TV lacks eARC but others do get 5.1+ playback.

Hope this helps

and yes, the Sonos app update is awful. Hopefully they’ll release an update to allow going back onto S1, but this has its downsides.
