I think a lot of us grew up staring at those album covers, etc

I was a great fan of Yes et al, a Roger Dean cover almost guaranteed a listen to me

I didn’t realize that Electric State was made into a movie.
I was disappointed in the book. I thought the compositing was not done well, and was surprised that someone didn’t object before it went to print.
I really liked the idea. I saw a behind-the-scenes video on the making of somewhere, maybe YouTube or Vimeo?
For context, I was a commercial retoucher, film colorist, vfx artist/compositor for thirty years.
Going Postal was made into a rather good, amusing movie, and I’m pretty sure that he worked on the movie. Worth a look.

Chabon is excellent. Vivid, clever, engaging. Chandler is the best of his type. His writing is full of fabulous turns of phrase.
And now for something completely different…
I’ve almost finished Jon Ronson’s The Castle and am gobsmacked by it. I don’t know whether to feel pity for, or be aghast at, the flawed humans he has encountered.

I came really close to buying at the airport yesterday (it would have been the first paperback I had bought this year), but eventually decided to buy it to read on Kindle or on Audible as I really enjoy listening to him reading his books (I often go for both).
I love Jon’s books and finding flawed humans seems to be his speciality.
He grew up not far from me and I went to see him speak a few years ago and it was great (or he was great at least).

I was a Peace Corps teacher in Liberia in the late 1970s. In 1980, Samuel Doe led a coup and became President. His regime was eventually challenged by Charles Taylor, starting the First Liberian Civil War on Christmas Eve, 1989. There were two wars, or arguably, one long one lasting until 2003.
Many Liberians fled their nation, and a sizeable number went to Ivory Coast, and a still sizeable number of those wound up at a refugee camp just west of Accra in Ghana: Buduburam.
This is an impressive and detailed sociological and political analysis from Elizabeth Holzer, who did embedded research there during camp protests.
It is also an excellent companion to a film which I strongly recommend:

N.K. Jemisin - The Fifth Season
The Three-Body Problem - Liu Cixin
All very enjoyable reading, and I’m looking forward to buying and reading the next instalments. The Fifth Season was probably my favourite, with Ancillary Justice a very close second. Interesting ideas and great character development in both of these novels.
The Three-Body Problem was frustrating at times because the writing had a huge impact on pace. The opening was brutal and engaging, but the characters ultimately too vague, and the use of third person a frustration, especially when moving the story forward. Nonetheless, I’m interested to learn how the story plays out.

I have read 2 of the 3 series and own the third but not read it yet.
The three body problem worked better as an audio book IMO and I enjoyed it more in that format than on Kindle where I started them.
The Ann Leckie series gets better and better as it goes and after finishing the trilogy I have the next books to read but I have not gotten around to it yet, due to work commitments.
