What Format for external drive for best performance?

I will adding a new external USB 3.1 to my Mac mini for my Roon music library.

Roon recommends exFAT, but if it is only going to be used on my Mac mini (M1) should I use
Mac OS Extended? Would one be faster?

The format doesn’t really have anything to do with speed, only compatibility. ExFAT is usually recommended if you’re going to move the disk between Mac, Windows and Rock. If you’re only interested in Mac compatibility, you can use APFS.
