The Royal Dutch Scam, a Dutch professional band playing Steely Dan. An extraordinary performance!
Two days ago I saw Wishbone Ash @ Reigen, Vienna for the first time. The band started their “Time Was 2026 Tour” a few days before that. Tried to catch the band for a few years now… but now it finally happened.
It was a great evening… no fancy stuff… just music!
Went to The People’s Festival at Vega Copenhagen. It was a whole festival with three stages filled with all sorts of folk music. In Danish people and folk is spelled the same.
Many great acts and a sense of spirit and care.
Finnish Anamaret mixing traditional Sami joiker with electronics and hardcore noise rock on a piece of wood with four strings.
Faroese artist Teitur proposed a rain dance and made the whole room dance a chain rain dance.
Swedish and Norwegian Ale House Sessions played very danceable barok folk inspired by Nordic and British melodies.
At the the smallest stage Carol Supreme transformed the moshpit into traditional folk dance scene and almost headbanged to their very Black Sabbath like analouge riffs.
Dreamers Circus invited local youth quire, Maija Kauhanen and a string quartet on stage with them
A very rare experience of music and community.
Just a few poor quick shots from a wonderful concert with Earth yesterday, on the opening evening of the CTM Festival in Berlin, Haus der Visionäre.
Earth played their legendary 2005 comeback album in its entirety, „Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method“. (Starting their EU tour, but the only evening where they play Hex)
Before the concert we watched a screening of the Earth documentary, Even Hell Has Its Heroes, at the Neue Zukunft cinema. Great movie too. (Available for streaming, download, and on disc: https://www.evenhellhasitsheroes.com/)
Yesterday Mrs. Jay and I enjoyed Day 2 of the Dragged Into Bliss Festival @ Viper Room, Vienna.
The evening started at 6:20pm with newcomers “Das neue Leben” (The New Life). The band played a mix of grunge/punk/noise-rock and released their first EP in late 2025.
Next up where “Glut”. The band released their first single back in 2024 their music was a mix of noisy alt/punk/psych-rock.
We missed the third band Over-Gain Optimal Death from France because we had to pick up something to eat. When we came back the place was really crowded as the event was almost sold out.
We returned in time to catch a front of stage spot for Madhouse Express. The band is hailing from Prague, Czech Republic and is playing really good psychedelic-rock (though their latest releases leaned a bit more towards psych-pop). After an extended sound-check the band started to play. After the first song was finished the place was on fire. Great band, great crowd, a lot of dancing and definitely the highlight of the evening for me.
Next up was the band Odd Couple from Berlin, Germany. The played a great set. Especially the second half of the set was very dancable with tracks like “Dübelmann” and “Shake”.
As we were getting tired we left a bit earlier and missed the last band Cadû.
John 5 at the Hopmok in Novato, California - 1/25/2026
Great show. Hard to get good pics through the crowd though.
Going to see Beth Hart March 17 in Atlanta, GA.
Yesterday I saw The Dream Syndicate @ Chelsea, Vienna.
The band started their current “The Dream Syndicate Presents Medicine Show In Its Entirety” Tour in the US back in November 2025. The European leg of the tour started in Italy a week ago.
The band started with songs from their 21st century reunion albums. After a short break they played the album “Medicine Show” followed by an encore. The gig was great and it’s amazing how timeless some of their songs are.
My first metal gig of the year was quite intense. Cryptopsy are currently touring throughout Europe and celebrate the 30th anniversary of their 1996 album “None So Vile”.
When I arrived at the venue Corpse Pile already kicked things off. The band was way better than I have expected. Awesome live performance and very good sound.
Next band was Inferi, a technical death metal band hailing from Nashville, Tennessee. The music was not really my cup of tea and it seemed that the band had a bit of a hard time getting the crowd moving.
200 Stab Wounds (also from the US) were the reason I bought tickets for the show and they didn’t disappoint. I totally dig their style of death metal and had a great time. Crowd was on fire at this point.
Metallica’s “For Whom The Bell Tolls” started to play and a few minutes later Cryptopsy entered the stage. Unfortunately the sound was not very good at this point (had the impression it got worse with every band playing). I watched two-thirds of the show and left a bit earlier (mainly because I had to work today). Anyways… the crowd obviously had a great time and frontman Matt McGachy seems to be one of the nicest dudes in metal. I really like his stage presence and the way he interacts with the audience.
Alejandro ROCKS!!
Yes he does. I’ll be seeing him next month in Ann
Arbor, MI. Aljandro is an old friend. Whenever he plays near me, we meet up for dinner and then go to the show.
“The Phil Collins Story” on Feb. 3 at The Landmark Theater in Syracuse, NY
Took a flyer and bought 2 tickets well before Christmas without knowing anything about it. I’m a long time Genesis, Phil, and Peter fan, seen them all multiple times and figured I’d enjoy the music. I did, it was fine, really. A Phil cover band that did a respectable job with Phil-era Genesis and his solo material. The song selection was not wonderful, in my opinion, and the cheesy between-songs narration really didn’t add anything to the show other than to allow it to be billed as a ‘docu-concert’, whatever the heck that is. Overall, if you have the chance and you’re a huge fan, especially one who prefers his biggest charting songs, it might be worth your time and money, but not outstanding by any means.
Grace Bowers at the Independent in San Francisco - 2/5/2026
Great show! Grace was incredible. Opening was a local band called Peaboo and the Catz. A group of young kids (13, 15, and 17) who played their hearts out and did great.
One of the most criminally underrated indie rock bands: Naked Lunch from Austria, at Berghain Kantine in Berlin, yesterday on Feb 6. (Not the UK Industrial band)
If they had not been from Austria and if they had not been f****d over by the recording industry (like many of their contemporaries in the „alternative“ boom of the early nineties), they could have been as big as anyone (though might be dead, you never know what it’s good for).
Oliver Welter struggled on through the decades and various incarnations and band members, and now there’s a new album and first tour in 13 years. What a fun evening with lots of sad and entertaining stories, beautiful ballads, and still rocking hard. I don’t cry often at shows, yesterday I did.
