What makes a great JAZZ PIANIST? Examples of outstanding artists and recordings

Hi @AndersVinberg,

I listened to “War Orphans” the other day. A fantastic album, beautifully recorded. I’ve known and liked Bobo Stenson for many years now, but this album is really something special. Didn’t know it. Glad you recommended it.

This album is stupendous in both performance and sound. Thanks for the recommendation.

This is an album @RBM recommended in “What are you listening to now?”. Paul Bley should be mentioned in this thread as well…

Not sure if it qualifies as jazz, but -

Honestly speaking, I don’t think it does, but I can understand why you like this album. Music shouldn’t be pigeonholed anyway.

I love these threads.

I’ll second (or a millionth) Sunday at the Village Vanguard. Not only do I REALLY love the album; but the ambient sounds (glasses clinking, hushed chat) give the recording the real feel of being there and an eerie echo through time of 1961.

The track ‘Jade Visions’ which I think was a Scott LaFaro composition is possibly my favourite trio track of all time. - a great way of testing a hifi to draw out those bass notes and brushed drums. Bill’s washes of piano and the slow metronomic vibe makles it feel contemporary and is similar in feel to ‘Peace Piece’ and also likewise his work on Kind of Blue.

Incidentally, the other day I was looking at this cover and was drawn to Bill’s fingers. I wondered if the two and one was a sad reference to the passing of Scott; I’m guessing that the album was released after he died. That’s my theory…

John Medeski, of Medeski Martin and Wood, is fascinating. I have heard MMW live, and Medeski played a prepared piano, and a harmonium. This stuff became the great Free Magic: Live, my favorite MMW album. But this solo album is fantastic:

Thanks for your post. Great recommendations. I have both albums and like them very much. Check out this clip - Medeski on an acoustic piano…

I, too, have seen Medeski and the other guys (including Scofield) live on stage - several times! Mind-blowing concerts!!!

Better live than on recordings IMHO.

Agreed.

But less convenient :grinning:.

Not at all; life is about experiences!

Duke Ellington is missing from this thread. He does not have the dexterity of some of the players listed here, but his piano playing is remarkable none the less. Here is a good article on the subject: https://www.npr.org/programs/jazzprofiles/archive/ellington_pianist.html

He has a few solo albums, but his talent is also as an accompanist. Check out “The great summit” with Louis Armstrong. His playing on “Perdido” on “Ellington Uptown” is remarkable, for example. In a trio formation, “piano in the foreground” is very good.
And here is one of my favorites:

Another great pianist worth mentioning in this thread is Marc Copland. “Alone” is a solo album. Excellently recorded.

Great thread, thanks for all the wonderful recommendations!
Nice to see some of my favorite artists already mentioned, even better to see a lot of stuff still to explore.

@Nikhil_Nayak mentioned the Tingvall Trio, I also like them a lot. Favorite album however is Beat (excellent sounding 24/96 version available on hdtracks by the way).

As a pianist, I listen to Iiro Rantala a lot right now. He has some great albums on ACT and was also part of the series “Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic” mentioned by @HWZ above. He is extremely creative in his improvisations and plays a very emotional style with impeccable microtiming. Check him out on youtube, he can be really funny as well.

Solo work with own compositions and some standards:

One of my favorite albums along with bassist Lars Danielsson:
