Sliding into gothic country territory

Gothic Country is a new one on me; it figures that Tom Waits would be involved. I’m gonna give it a listen but I might wait til I’m suitably depressed.

Haha, good luck Michael! Jim really never leaves me depressed, I must say. Quite the contrary. But his sound is unique. Sometimes also labelled “country noir”. I think some of the later Tom Waits records would qualify, although really completely different. I think Johnny Dowd is closer to Jim’s vision and spirit. Also Mary Gauthier, but I think you’ll know her. If not, check her out too, she’s great!

This album is super good. Great sound. I might consider buying the LP. It isn’t cheap though. I love Gardot and can’t wait to see her concert in July.

Yeah it’s good, isn’t it? He really hasn’t a bad album if you ask me. Although I still prefer his first (Wrong-Eyed Jesus) and fourt (Transnormal Skiperoo), for being the most “gothic” / “noir” (swampy, mysterious, whatever).

'Handcuffed to a fence in Mississippi" is a pretty good start - I’d never heard of him but it seems like plenty of well-known musicians want to work with him, always a good sign.

“Waffles, Triangles & Jesus” isn’t particularly “noir”, but a hell of a lot of fun. :sunglasses:
