Thanks for mentioning this one… I only own the first two albums… another nice one indeed…
Changed your prescription recently then Andreas?
Many decades before Niccolò Paganini even was born, the Italian virtuoso violinist and composer Pietro Locatelli (1695–1764) published in 1733 a collection of 12 virtuoso violin concertos, L’Arte del Violino, Op.3. These concertos were designed to explore the limits of the technically feasible on a baroque violin, and to this effect Locatelli added capricci to the outer movements of every one of these 12 concertos—think of these pieces as an extended cadenza where the soloist plays a virtuoso solo part. Paganini’s Op.1 is another collection of 24 Capricci, and Locatelli sometimes is referred to as the 18th century Paganini. Locatelli’s Capriccio 23, written for the first movement of the last of the twelve concertos, is known as Il Labirinto Armonico and has been a popular encore piece with some violinists—David Oistrakh and Henryk Szeryng are known to have played this showpiece.
On this album, the young French violinist Gabriel Tchalik plays the 24 Capricci out of context of their respective concerto movements, only the second time this has been done and recorded. It makes for a stunning display of baroque virtuoso violin playing, even if Tchalik uses a modern violin. The technical prowess is impressive, and even if it may be musically questionable, this makes for some gripping listening experience. For further enjoyment, listen to this back to back with your favorite recording of Paganini’s Capricci…
