This double-CD was released by DG in 2005, following the death of Norbert Brainin, founder and first violin of the Amadeus Quartet. This is old-school playing at its finest.

Time for the Father.
Yet another version of Jean-Féry Rebel’s Les Élémens… the diversity and quality of Baroque music is amazing… Hearing this in a live performance must be very entertaining… with the audience’s heads all covered in powdered periwigs…
The Greek musician Sokratis Sinopoulos is one of those people who make a living out of doing what almost no-one else does. In this case, playing an ancient instrument. Ancient as in really ancient—he plays the Cretan lyra which dates from Byzantine times, 1000 AD.
Tonight I enjoyed two albums on which Sokratis plays an important part, both released in 2019. First, an album released on Fuga Libera by the French viol ensemble L’Achéron, with music by Dowland. Sokratis on this album plays the lyra as if it were a soprano viol, and the resulting sound is quite intriguing. In addition, the album includes five improvised pieces, with the lyra and its pang prominently exhibited. I won’t post that album—Lachrimae Lyrae-Tears of Exile—on this board tonight.
Instead, I opted to post the second album released by Sokratis Sinopoulos in 2019—this time on ECM, with some Jazzy pieces arranged for drums, piano, double bass and… Cretan lyra. It is tranquil and relaxing music, perfect for late-night listening without inducing bad dreams. And so to bed…
