There’s no shortage of good recordings of the wonderful violin sonata by César Franck, and the Strauss sonata has also been recorded many times. But again, I like Ehnes’ playing very much, his lush and beautiful tone, aptly accompanied by his long-time piano partner, Andrew Armstrong.
Two years before this 2015 release on Onyx, the same label had released another beautiful rendition of the same two works by Augustin Dumay and Louis Lortie…
Has that album disappeared from streaming services? I have almost all prefab sprout on CD but that one I had on Tidal.
Looks like I need to go searching

No idea sorry. I don’t have Tidal, etc. If only Paddy didn’t have the health issues and was provided a decent studio budget to really do these songs justice, with real musicians, etc.
Yes it’s sad as he was such an amazing song writer and all round talent. That album is the hole in my PS library, but I just found it and purchased it.
Thanks for the reminder
yes that is in my Tidal, but I have struggled to buy a physical copy or a CD quality copy.
Just downloaded Crimson/Red from Qobuz now and feel slightly more complete now
This song is both hilarious and heartbreaking, given what occurred a month or so after it was released.
Nevertheless an amazing piece of lyric writing, settled in a suitably ironically cheerful piece of music. Genius!
Really enjoying the new Elbow album. It improves with every listen. This album has inspired me to revisit (and visit for the first time, in some instances) their back catalogue and I’ve yet to be disappointed.

I’m sat here listening to ‘The Gunman and Other Stories’. Not exactly one of his best, but still has some moments of excellence. We had a (farmyard) cat called Paddy (R.I.P). Cornfield Ablaze and Cowboy Dreams are the standouts.
Another stunner, if people aren’t aware of his work you may have heard/seen him play with Efterklang, Horse Feathers, and/or Machinefabriek to name a few.
My first album by him, and still my favourite-it has an interactive element, in that people ‘wrote in’ to contribute. In the case of this song the initial melody sent in as an A Capella informed the music as Peter was too emotional about the subject (the drowning of his friend) to write music initially and created a poem, which forms the lyrics.
As I understand it the rest of the music was written from this starting point of the first A Capella, and the readings heard as bv’s are other e-mail-ins.
I did not know that!
My only familial fact was his sister is Heather Woods Broderick, whose debut solo album is amazing, and who is also a famous collaborative artists-I have seen her with Efterklang and Alela Diane.
