What We Are Listening To [2021-12]

I keep coming back to this one too. Never really connected with another album by them (the odd track yes). Adam Duritz’s voice is just sublime-he carries a fairly pedestrian band masterfully on this one.

I never gave them a real listen until someone here mentioned it being a “top five deserted island must haves”. I think that is how it was framed. I’ve listened a few times since and can appreciate their argument. five though? I could not pick only five if I tried.

Round Here is a system test track for me. But I’m have several other albums by them, and that’s the only one I actually listen to.

I’m guessing that was probably Rockhound as I know he is a big fan of the band.

August… Is in my top 10 albums. It’s a time and a place thing, but it will always hd a special place in my heart. I like all of their albums though, they were consistently good

Although given it’s Sunday name here, this is a great album in its own right-it certainly doesn’t sound like outtakes and rejects, I think it’s probably my second favourite next to Illinoise itself. It’s pretty majestic, beautifully produced, and has one of my favourite ever Sufjan Stevens songs on it-‘Springfield or Bobby got a shadfly caught in his hair’. I’ve used that song to describe myself with music before in an icebreaker.

Great album. In fact, all 3 are both new to me and in pretty heavy rotation here!

Saskia Giorgini

Pianist Saskia Giorgini earned equal renown as a soloist, chamber player, and vocal accompanist early in her career. She has released several albums on the PentaTone Classics label.
Giorgini was born in Turin, Italy, on February 25, 1985. Giorgini took up the piano at age four. She entered the Incontri col Maestro Piano Academy in Imola, Italy, when she was 15; her teachers there included Franco Scala and Louis Lortie. Giorgini went on to the Conservatorio di Torino with Claudio Voghera, graduating with top grades and honors. Giorgini took further specialized studies at the Accademia di Music di Pinerolo with Enrico Pace, the Kunstuniversität in Graz, Austria, with Julius Drake (in song accompaniment), and finally at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with Pavel Gililov.
A breakthrough for Giorgini came in 2016 when she won the International Mozart Competition in Salzburg and also took a special prize for interpretation of a commissioned work. The following year, she made her debut at the Musikverein in Vienna, playing an all-Mozart recital. Since then, Giorgini has found engagements with such orchestras as the Lodz Philharmonic in Poland, CBC Radio Orchestra in Canada, and China’s Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra. Recitals and radio broadcasts have taken her to such venues as the Philharmonia in St. Petersburg, the Vancouver Summer Festival, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. In demand as a chamber musician and accompanist, she has performed with such figures as tenor Ian Bostridge, violinist Janine Jansen, and clarinetist Martin Fröst.
Giorgini recorded an album of piano music by George Enescu for the Piano Classics label in 2019 and then backed Bostridge on a pair of recordings on PentaTone Classics, one of Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, D. 795, in 2020, and one of songs by Ottorino Respighi in 2021. Later that year, she released her solo debut on PentaTone, featuring Liszt’s Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses.

Well I enjoyed The Chameleons gig tonight . Was great to meet @killdozer and Mrs Killdozer in the flesh, thanks for the food choice Carl it was delicious. Shame you had to leave a little early. You missed them covering New Rose by The Damned for their last song, it was really good.

Mrs. Dozer and I enjoyed the evening, food, music and company

Look forward to doing something similar again. Sad to miss to the last song and don’t usually leave gigs early. Happy to be on a non-cancelled train home though.

Taking a much needed trip down memory lane!

Interestingly enough the Qobuz version wouldn’t play for me, I would hit play, but nothing would happen. Good thing the Tidal version is playing just fine!
