What We Are Listening To [2021-12]

Between 2003 and 2005, the German Henschel Quartett recorded and released on Arte Nova three albums with the complete Mendelssohn string quartets. For many this is the best recorded cycle available, and both interpretational quality and sound engineering are certainly excellent. A 3-CD set was also released on 2005. On Tidal, the box set is available as 44.1 MQA, while the three individual albums are offered as FLAC.

This ensemble was established in 1994, when the German-Danish cellist Mathias Beyer-Karlshøj joined the siblings Christoph, Markus (violins) and Monika Henschel (viola).

Another Tidal Daily Discovery recommendation added. The track it queued up was acoustic- but the album is a real mix, although all pretty chilled. Added to library :grinning:

Love the Allman Brothers :sunglasses:
I was working in Macon Georgia 10 years ago and managed to squeeze in a visit to the band museum and Rose Hill Cemetery. Worth a visit if you are in that neck of the woods. I made a short video, adding my favourite AB song as the soundtrack - In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.

I must say that I really enjoy the albums that she produced during lockdown. There seems to be a negative stigma related to Taylor Swift. Personally, I think she is a great talent.

Me too, they are possibly her best albums.
She is an easy target with all her success, but damn she is talented.

And talking about talented people.

Have they moved away from the archived vocals? I have a couple of earlier albums but it was starting to get a bit ‘samey’ so I haven’t bothered with the last few albums. I actually originally stumbled upon the band because they used one of my favourite photographs on one of their album covers. I bought a print of this photo in Brussels many years ago and still love it.

"HOLLAND HOUSE BADLY BURNED. WS/57. Holland House, Lord Ilchester’s historic 17th. Century house, has been damaged during the recent air raids on London. An oil bomb started a fire on one of the towers and a ‘Molotoff breadbasket’ and a shower of incendiaries fell on the building. Firemen saved the east wing from complete destruction, but the rest of the house is a shell. Holland House, just off Kensington High-street, was London’s great Whig salon in the 18th century and the home of Charles James Fox, and also earlier, of Joseph Addison, founder of the Spectator . Photo shows - The famous library containing a number of valuable and historical books was completely wrecked. The spectacle of the three men shown inspecting books in the library was likely staged for propaganda purposes.

Volume 4 in this ongoing series aimed to record the complete music for solo and multiple violas da gamba by the master, Marin Marais. A huge undertaking overall, but these are accomplished performances excellently recorded in a space that puts the musicians right in front of you…

Yes, beautiful interpretations… What a shame that on Tidal volumes 1–3 are only available as AAC… This, vol.4, is the first of the released sets to be available as FLAC.
