I’m on a massive Grace Slick trip at the mo.
I love the Late Night Tales compilations. Can’t say I remember a duff one so far.
The Retrospect Ensemble was founded in 2009 with musicians out of what had been well-known since the 1980’s—The King’s Consort. Founder Robert King in 2007 had been convicted of sexual abuse of minors and the harpsichordist Matthew Hall had taken over the King’s Consort. Two years later the Consort’s trustees had decided to revert the right to the name to Robert King and relaunch as Retrospect Ensemble. Regrettably, only five years later it was shut down for reasons of financial viability.
In those short five years, Retrospect Ensemble recorded several albums for Linn; amongst them in 2009 and 2011 two fabulous albums with Henry Purcell’s trio sonatas. This is the second album from 2011 and it is widely considered a reference recording of these pieces.
This was an enjoyable listen earlier. Saw them in 1994 supporting the Cocteau Twins.
Haven’t listened to this is a while.
One of my favourite albums for the last 35 years. Timeless.
I know critics and fans disagree, but for me the best Marillion album ever.
