Which HQP Filter are you using? [2015-2023]

I think it is important too for this, what was the used source sampleratefamily, 44 or 48.

[That little chain right now: Airport Express Gen 1 (FW 7.6.1) feeding via TOS Pi4&Hifiberry Digi+ IO feeding HQP Desktop on Ubuntu feeding PI400 with Hifiberry Digi2 Pro (running RopieeeXL) via NAA feeding DAC via USB or TOS. PI400 with RopieeeXL allows to switch between several ā€žapplicationsā€œ very comfortable incl. feeding DAC via TOS or HAT. By using Airport Express 1 ALAC is guaranteed :hugs:] Ah, switching HQP Filters with HQPD Control of course.

(Next step: quit Roon again as for my usage scenario (streaming) not needed.)

Has anyone tried the new XFi SDM - SDM setting? Jussi describes it as extreme fidelity medium bandwidth. I am loving it! Let me know your experience.

I am using ā€œXFiā€ now and I think it is better than either ā€œwideā€ or ā€œNarrowā€. The difference is subtle but it is there.

Agreed. And a little subtle here and a little more there and all of a sudden it adds up to Wow! That’s the high-end.

I use HQPlayer for this very reason. He regularly improves filters, modulators, integrators, and converters. It’s like getting an updated DAC…especially when use a NOS DAC.

The more I listen to XFi the less I think it is subtle. Jussi said it well, extreme high fidelity. I have not done a/b comparisons, but i immediately notice that everything is more present. Subtly is what makes the difference between good wine and great wine. XFi brings out the great wine.

Hm, this ā€žRoon Radioā€œ I like a lot. AI from Amazon is pretty strong too imo, however myself happy with this Roon AI. Not happy at all with Apple Music AI. Apple doing mistakes if Artistā€˜s names are the same, etc, etc…However Apple did buy this new AI for music…Roon Radio only reason for my usage scenario (streaming) to keep Roon.

It is my new normal! Love it! Big difference, seems more musical and full!

My current settings for a Spring 3. I use hires for the Nx filter. Really pushing my little 8th gen i3 to the limit! Any tips on upgrading the cooling on a NUC? 80C is fine, right? :upside_down_face:

You can get some alternative cases for a NUC. But NUCs are a bit tricky since they are very tightly packed to make them as small as possible. So if you are building a fresh, going a bit larger form factor, such as Mini-ITX or Micro-ATX make cooling much easier.

It will thermal throttle if it gets too hot, so at most you will start getting drop-outs if it happens.

So far I have not heard of anybody who would have burnt a CPU. Although running a big CPU without any cooling attached would be very risky.

YMMV , but I can report that I have had an issue from Day One with Roon connected to HQPlayer in which the first track of any album is always skipped, and randomly other tracks would just get skipped.
BUT, with the latest Roon update, I haven’t had a single track skipped yet. Everyone’s system is different, but for me, it’s the update I’ve long been waiting for, finally.

Rather than try to cool the 8th gen i3, I think you should upgrade it to a newer i5 or i7.

So for reference and because someday I’d like to get past DSD256 with a good nos dac…

Mind you I’m only going to 48k DSD256 and I’m using a microATX board with a large D15 noctua cooler (temps never got above 65) and a gpu w/cuda, but the build I just threw together is so far very stable and temps are very good. The machine is down in my office so I’m not worried about size or the little bit of fan noise it makes.

…since my newer hackintosh that is running a core i9 9900k was stripped of cuda support on 10.14 due to apples silly games with nVidia, and now on 10.15.7 no longer supports hqp 4.17.1, I had to come up with a more future proof server… almost 7 years and we still have windows 10… with mac we’ve had 10.10, 10.11, 10.12, 10.13, 10.14, 10.15, 11, and now 12! :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Windows 10 will be supported until Oct 2025. By then we be at macOS 15 or 16… :woozy_face:

… I decided to re-purpose some parts from a previous hackintosh… Threw it in all together in a box with a 512ssd, a 10tb exos drive for storage, 7th gen i5 7600k with an overclock to 4.7GHz, 16GB ram and an old GTX Titan X on a Striped down version of Win10 (all bloatware and crap removed). I figure I should be future proofed for a bit.

It was a bit slower than the i9 RoonServer on mac when it came to analyzing the library… took ~2 days for ~100000 tracks. It just finished a bit ago and I just gave it a torture test for a bit using a 192k/24 w/poly-sinc-gauss-xla ASDM7ECv2 48kDSD256. That combo really loads up the cpu and the gpu. There weren’t any dropouts but I now kinda wish I had splurged for the i7 7700k back when I bought this processor… I would’ve had a bit more wiggle room. Without cuda this would be a no go with this filter and modulator combo. But with other combos, lately it’s been SincLI and GuassHiRes lp, it’s much less taxing on the gpu and cpu… ususally at or below 60% on cpu and 10-20 on gpu.

I have it set up headless and it boots with auto login and starts RoonServer and HQP. Now that it is all configured, I access it from remote desktop from other my other PC’s, hackintoshes and even iDevices via the microsoft remote desktop app. I use the HQPDcontrolv4 on the the iDevices to change HQP filters. Any major hqp config changes I just use remote desktop.

Once again, not sure about dropouts but as far as usage and temps here is a null output pass of the filter you used (left side is AMSDM7EC 512+fs and right side is non EC)

Not sure why, maybe @jussi_laako can explain it, but the non EC seems less efficient?

Null output will just run processing at maximum speed, so it doesn’t tell whether you are going to have drop-outs. At least some cores should stick to 100%.

Not really, it just doesn’t contain pieces that could be sensibly distributed to more than one core per modulator.

Well, since HQPlayer is really gated by single core speed, at least when using the better ECv2 modulators, I don’t see how the M1 Ultra is going to make a huge difference. The Performance Cores are more plentiful in the M1 Ultra, but they aren’t faster.
