someone mentioned PCM and NS9 being good for more detailed listening and I have to say that this PCM setting with NS9 is about as good as the DSD256 settings I’m using. (using M1 Pro MBP) Interesting because the manual says that NS9 was specifically for 4x rates, but it’s a champ at 16x as far as I can tell. Also, nice that PCM uses 1/10th the processing compared to the DSD256. One very strange thing is when using DSD and waiting for a song to load, about 3 seconds before I can hear some faint intermittent clicks. It doesn’t happen with PCD, just DSD… odd
If anyone has some better DSD256 settings good for very layered electro and alternative/indie rock, then I’m open to suggestions
When you compare PCM and DSD outputs, always use same filters for both.
If your DAC is Holo Audio, set the PCM gain compensation to -6 dB (now you have it set to 0). To compensate for the 6 dB volume difference. Also remember to set DAC Bits to 20.
You can also set PCM rate limit to 768k to avoid output rate dropping to 384k for hires content.
I’m using 1x=poly-sinc-gauss-long and Nx=poly-sinc-gauss-hires-lp
@jussi_laako and @Chunhao_Lee — With your help and that of Chris Connaker, I now have Dolby Atmos 5.1.2 playing out through a MacBook to my CAPS Twenty Windows server with HQP Desktop in it. (El Guapo — the miniDSP UDIO-8 interface between the Mac and the AES16e card in the Windows server did it.). For the compressed Dolby Atmos version that is Apple Spacial Music, what would you recommend as the best HQP settings? I am still limited to upscaling at DSD64 for multichannel to avoid stuttering. I’m using poly-sinc-exr2 and ASDM7ECv2 at the moment. Thanks. JCR
If the source is hires (source rate >= 88.2k), you could as well try poly-sinc-gauss-hires. It is relatively light to process and nice for such sources.
But I think any of the gauss-hires options or any of the mp3/mqa filters, would be recommended for lossy Atmos (which is all the current Atmos on Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music HD)
Awesome! You can also use this way to run DRP for ATMOS-TrueHD on MacBook and send audio data to your Win server.
I use mp3/mqa-mp for movies (I guess it has the shortest delay?) or gauss-hires series filters for ATMOS music so far (thank you @jussi_laako you’re wizard!).
@Chunhao_Lee , at your and @jussi_laako ’s suggestion, I am using poly-sinc-gauss-lp, which sounds better on lossy Atmos than poly-sinc-ext2 and, as a bonus, plays out at DSD128 through the Okto with no stuttering. Bravo! JCR
I’ve had it on gauss-long (1x) / gauss-hires-lp (Nx) for weeks now (ASDM7ECv2 / DSD256) Played around with some other filters the other day, a few which were my previous favorites and just keep coming back to this combo
