Which Mac Mini is best?

I have the base M4 Mac mini, slapped an extension dock on it with a 4TB nvme drive inside to store my CD-Quality rips and roon runs 24/7 on it. System is set to low power mode to conserve energy but even so Roon runs without a hiccup (as long as the software is OK)…cough cough UPDATE cough…

Can’t fault the hardware at all.

Yet, you’ve neither asked for help nor opened a support request until this weekend. There are many here who offer their time and experience to help out, and Roon will pick up your ticket after the weekend.

Moreover, your experience is atypical, and Roon does work well for the vast majority most of the time.

Anyway, I hope you stick around, accept the help on offer, and get the issues resolved.

I use older Mac mini 2014. But not with macOS. I installed Roonrock OS on it and it works perfectly. I think newer M Macs minis are a bit overkill for Roon.

I have both an M1 and M4 mini…..and I have been running Roon on the M1 with zero problems. I have my music on a NAS server.

Thanks, I sw a dealer friend today about all of the issues and he stopped me immediately after I said I run a Nucleus and said they’d been huge problems and that everyone who switched to an M4 has had no issues. He runs the entire store on a mac mini m4 with no issue other than the occasional Mac OS upgrade. I ordered the M4 today. Hopefully it ends the problems. I opened a trouble ticket and they contacted me to today to start looking at the technical reports on my system too. thanks

I use an M2 Mac Mini as my Roon Server, and it streams to five different systems.

Try using your Lumin’s internal features for a while and leave Roon out of it. Did similar recently to determine a sound settings preference. Reinserted Roon back in with adjustments and now hear a better experience.

Love my lifetime subscription to Roon!

Yeah, I’m assuming if I log out of roon and dissconnect the nucleus from ethernet my Lumin P1 will be flawless as it won’t have any software/roon related issues. One of the reasons I got roon initially was I liked their EQ functionality and I use it to take out a bass resonance and sometimes to boost 2k and up…

I think your new Mac will fix the issues. I have a M1 and that thing is more than fast enough. However, I still use my older NUC for Roon and other audio/video use as HTPC. It’s showing its age now. Doesn’t run the best with my full local library, so have limited it to Tidal only temporarily. Will get a dedicated M series for Roon down the line.

I also find when controlling wired endpoints with iOS tablets and phones to generally not be the best. When using my iMac or MacBook Pro as remotes to control an endpoint, or for playback directly to an attached DAC, it’s significantly more stable. Phones falling asleep and waking back up or switching apps even momentarily can get Roon to freeze up and drop all endpoints. Then it takes a whole minute to get it running back up and for all endpoints to show up.

Thanks, I started hardwiring my macbook to the network (the lumin P1 and the Nucleus are also hardwired of course) I still roon lose connection, stall, give error “Uh Oh something’s wrong Roon can’t connect to the server” errors that take 5-10 minutes of quitting and restarting roon to recover from. I ordered a mc mini today. Hopefully that works, if not then I’ll cancel Roon and never look back as its been incredibly frustrating for years - and - reading the forums here I’m def not alone with the same issues. Thanks !

Hardwiring definitely helps. Thankfully I’ve been using Roon for such a long time that I knew when I’d next get the chance to open the home up for construction, I’d run individual lines for each device. Modem/Router → Switch → All audio devices/computers/NAS.

All audio and computer equipment connected to the 1 switch with individual CAT6 cables. No further downstream switches. Keeps it simple, even if overkill for a home setup.

I was having issues with my Bryston BDP-1 (hardwired) and did the same thing as was recommended to you. Power cycle all network equipment, restart all gear…which genuinely can help sometimes. However, the only thing that helped fix it was wiping my BDP-1 completely. Factory reseted it. It’s been stable since except when using any iPhone to control it.

I’m curious if you have you noticed any patterns as to when these crashes happen? Does it happen when you are going through different playlists/albums page, or switching tracks? Is the interface open while it happens, or do you have it closed and it happens in the background?

My working theory has been that underpowered devices can sometimes cause crashes within Roon, even if they are not used directly for playback itself. That momentary glitch in a remote control device can cause all playback to crash and endpoints to disappear. For example, I can use my MacBook Pro both as a remote and an endpoint for hours and Roon never hangs up. But the phones and tablets mess it up big time. Also, to keep it fair, I don’t connect my MacBook Pro through ethernet but through WIFI. It doesn’t make a difference. MacBook Pro keeps playback and Roon app solid. Go an hour without issue. Open a secondary phone or tablet and it comes crumbling down.

I’m very happily using a base M2 Mac mini here, and have been for a few years.

There’s no doubt that Minis make nice Roon Servers, but what many posts seem to be forgetting is that the question was whether a Mini will magically fix the highly specific issue(s) that the OP is experiencing.
