I will be setting up a Raspberry Pi as a Roon end-point. Based on what I have been reading, there are several options as far as the OS for the Raspberry. Based on what I have read, one option is DietPi. Another option is Jessie. I have seen several stores selling a Raspberry bundled with a microSD card with “NOOBS” OS preinstalled. Is NOOBS a third option or what does it do?
Noobs is a variation of Debian for the Pi, Jessie lite is the current version of Debian modified for the Pi. These are general operating systems for any eventuality and contain lots you don’t need. Changes need to be made manually much of which require a degree of knowledge about Linux. With DietPi the install is minimal. If you add RoonBridge all dependencies are added automatically and it is menu driven so no Linux knowledge required. Plus it’s author comes here and has his own forum so plenty of support.
DietPi seems to be the favorite around here.
I need a standalone player just in case Roon goes down, So I installed moodaudio: http://moodeaudio.org/23
Fyi “noobs”is a menu driven wrapper allowing you to install a compatible os just by selecting the one you want. You can make a noobs card by simply downloading the 8mage and writing it to your own card. Simplifies set up, hence the name “noobs”.
