Will my Roon library and playlists be updated when Tidal drops MQA?

I haven’t seen this discussed anywhere, but Tidal is dropping MQA support in two days. On the Tidal website they indicate that any MQA albums in your Tidal Collections and Tidal playlists will automatically be updated to the FLAC version, but I haven’t been able to find out whether or not those albums will be automatically updated in my Roon library and Roon playlists. Has anyone found any information about this? I suspect I’ll have to manually update my Roon library and playlists, but hopefully not.

Thanks for any help.

If you use the search feature you will find numerous threads about it. Tidal is rolling out the changes and all MQA will be updated to Flac automatically thru the system.

You apparently do not need to do anything. :crossed_fingers:that it does.

Thanks for the response. I did easily find the information that Tidal will be automatically updating any MQA albums in your Tidal Collections and Tidal playlists to FLAC, but haven’t been able to find any information about whether those same albums would be updated in Roon library and Roon playlists. Those are not managed by Tidal and as far as I know there is not any software link between the two environments (in other words, my Roon library - which can contain a mix of albums from Tidal, Qobuz and my NAS drive with downloaded files and ripped CD’s - is neither seen nor managed by Tidal). I think this means that the Roon software would need to manage the update for it to happen automatically. Without that I would expect that they would either disappear from my Roon environment or be tagged as “unavailable”. Another possibility is that whatever software links to the MQA albums are simply modified to point to the FLAC album instead, in which case Roon might not need to do anything.

The replacement has been under way gradually for months and seems to have replaced the albums in Roon seamlessly. The complete dropping of MQA in two days is just the final step.

Just had a look at my Tidal Library on Roon. Unfortunately the MQA Focus choice has disappeared from the Focus Menu so had to do a manual count of Tidal MQA Files still in there. Count is 288 of 1484 or 19.4%.
10 Days ago the count was just under 500 or about 30%.
Hopefully they quicken the pace as i’ve got 5hrs 30 mins till it is the 24th July.

Just over 13 hours left here till July 24th. I have no idea to be honest how many MQA albums there were in my library as I tend to favor Qobuz over Tidal. But the only times I’ve seen the MQA led light up on my DAC is when I am playing a daily Roon generated playlist. So there is still MQA out there.

Can’t wait for tomorrow because a significant part of my Tidal library is still in MQA format.

Thanks all for the responses. I guess I’ll just see what happens tomorrow when Tidal makes the switch. I started with Tidal several years ago, then had both Tidal and Qobuz for a while until I dropped Tidal as I no longer had an MQA DAC and Tidal was twice as much per month as Qobuz. With Tidal recently dropping the subscription price to the same as Qobuz I decided to give it a try again a couple weeks ago, since my annual Qobuz renewal is coming up in a couple of weeks and I’ve not been a fan of the Qobuz interface through Roon. I decided to stick with Tidal, so I went through and modified my Roon library and Roon playlists to Tidal (which fortunately wasn’t too time consuming as my Roon collection isn’t enormous). In switching over, though, I ended up with several MQA albums and so I’ve been curious whether the automatic Tidal conversion will carry over in Roon or if I’ll have to manually change the Roon library and playlists.

Some movement on the Tidal front. Got up this morning and confirmed that Tidal was still showing and playing on Roon and Audirvana. So i rebooted my Computer so that i would get fresh logins and unfortunately Roon is still showing and playing MQA Files, however Audirvana is now completely clear of MQA Files.
Hopefully Roon will update shortly.
Audirvana - MQA gone

Roon - Still withy MQA

Cambridge’s StreamMagic app is still playing MQA with Tidal. Even though the app lists it as FLAC. My DacMagic 200M still lights up blue and green a lot when playing one of the My Mixes through my CXN V2. I haven’t logged in or out yet, but I reckon that won’t make a difference.

I’ve looked up the same daily mix in both the Tidal app and Roon. And it’s still MQA as well.

I guess Tidal being USA based, they’ll switch later when they wake up.

Looks like some my old Cure and New Order albums that were MQA only are now CD quality Flac. So replacement went as planned.

Think is was wrong. Thru roon, still seeing MQA files but not thru Tidal app. Looks like could be tagging issues as well. Some MQA tagged albums are now showing as lossless once played. But still think a few MQA got left.

Take a look at Roon’s signal path. It will show you exactly what is playing. For me its easy to see as my DacMagic 200M shows different colors on its LEDs. White for PCM/FLAC. Green, Blue and Magenta when it comes to MQA.

Yes, I have looked at the path. It’s inconsistent. Some tagged as MQA are still showing MQA and others now showing as lossless Flac. If not cleared up soon, I just stick with Qobuz.

So this is interesting - just tried playing one of the Tidal MQA albums in my Roon library, and playback failed saying the album couldn’t be found. Removed the album from my library, then found it again on Tidal and re-added it. It still says that it’s MQA but it now played back successfully.

After still seeing the album spec’ed as MQA in Roon, opened the Tidal app and found the same album, where it’s listed as FLAC.

Something’s weird going on. Either Tidal app is mislabeling or roon isn’t getting the correct stream yet. Hopefully an update to roon won’t be required. But if haven’t found any MQA in the Tidal app including the 2L label albums that are MQA even on Qobuz. If Tidal is just manipulating the labeling, that’s bad news. If this isn’t sorted out in a day or two, I’ll just stick with Qobuz and avoid any of the confusion.

Tidal changes went through to Audirvana yesterday morning the 24th here in Australia. Before most of the rest of the world even hit the 24th. That was 36 Hours ago.

It would seem that the only participant that doesn’t have it’s act together is Roon.

Still getting MQA on roon.

Yeah me too as of today August 10. Is it just a tagging issue? I didn’t think so because it still MQA in the authentication field.

No, TIDAL is still serving up MQA, but is no longer marking it as such in its own apps.
