Will Roon ever be supporting MQA? [Answered - Now Live Roon 1.5]

Why are you constantly mentioning MP3 in the context of MQA? To say that MQA is better than MP3 and therefore worth consideration? This is pretty lame excuse to embrace a proprietary technology and that is not even a subject of this discussion. You can stream in CD quality from Quobuz, and Tidal.
The reason you mention MP3, and do not mention 4.1/16 streaming, is to divert attention from the fact that MQA is not here to enable quality. It was created to monopolize the chain from music production, to music distribution, and further, through MQA “certified” DAC technology.

I why exactly it is important that kids listening on the busy street from their phones using $10 earbuds use anything better than mp3 320 kbps quality?

It’s another patented technology that is yet to have commercial viability/ good solution but needs a platform like paramount studios or like to go for it / MQA in comparison did a brilliant marketing job with platform like Tidal and records companies - the public under estimates the latter effort is more difficult than having a better tech solution

Sorry buddy missing my point on the broader debate surrounding Hi Res streaming -MQA offers a more efficient mode of delivery in terms of bandwidth as compared to what we have now in the streaming space from a commercial standpoint as it has support of Tidal (platform) and record companies - I hope to see this as a trigger for further development in the streaming space - it is a subjective view and I respect that you don’t agree or have an alternative view.

Part of the point is that we see the community of people who care about quality music distribution and delivery appears to be shrinking. I mean, we don’t really know, but there is a sense that it is generational and as that community gets older it is not being replaced by a new generation who appreciates quality music reproduction.

If that’s the case, then it could mean that the brickwalled music trend, engineered for earbuds, bluetooth, and car audio, will be even more predominant. That has the danger of rendering high quality music gear obsolete because the content isn’t there to make a difference.

So the logic goes, if MQA sensitizes a younger generation to quality music, it will invigorate the market and have the ripple effect of benefiting us older folks. Even if MQA as a format ultimately fails.

I’m not sure that is the way it will work, and I’m also not sure that MQA isn’t a “deal with the devil” even if it does have that impact (for one thing, it could also revive DRM in music), but I can’t say it won’t. And I do hope that younger generations can learn and see the wonderful experience of hearing music reproduced in high quality ways.

My kids love music. They do seem somewhat interested in quality reproduction. But that could have something to do with the dozens of black and/or silver electronic boxes in daddy’s study…

What hi-res streaming is available in the USA? Not talking about redbook or MQA.

Communism or socialism does not work in the business of music , banking or anything where if the imperative of making a “buck” is absent. you will not find investors “punting” on new technology- I want a MQA or like form to be the start of a streaming form to be economically viable so corporations invest in where the mass market access music not for gratis - like in video we have alternatives like 4K HD streaming - it’s not about format wars it’s about platforms where music is consumed with requisite artist protection, royalties and perceived audiophile streaming friendly form - economics brings innovation- new technology cannot exist in a vacuum.

HD Tracks for starters and then some

Issue is - the current form is Easily ripped without both the artist and record company unfairly missing out on their fair economic legal entitlement across continents. Not a long term viable sustainable option.

I didn’t know HDTracks does hires streaming? What is the cost and where do I signup?

They are streaming now? I know about their downloads, but didn’t know they were streaming yet.

I don’t think they do. I think the original poster is confusing downloads with streaming.

Have you heard about Qobuz? It is going to launch in US very soon, if not you can VPN and set up an account, after that, there’s no need to VPN while streaming.

Qobuz streaming quality is better especially when it comes to DR rating. I’ll find Tidal DR is at the high side and can sound ‘compressed’ at times.

This is from the Qobuz terms and conditions.

“ARTICLE 6 - TERRITORY
Music files bought on the Site are reserved for Customers residing in the following territories: France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Austria, Spain, Italy, Poland and Ireland (hereinafter referred to as the “Territory”), who have a bank card issued by a banking institution established in the Territory.”

Are others doing this with cards from outside the “territory”? Does it work?

Most use Paypal.

I’ve known about it for years, but it is not in the US yet. The OP said there were lots of HD streaming options available. There really aren’t.

For now, TIDAL’s MQA is the only game in town.

It’s coming…

Yep. I saw that. But it isn’t here. They’ve been saying they were c Ming to the U.S. for a few years now.

Still, at present, there are no options.

In fact, acc’d to a recent article it’s supposed to already be included.

How did they get this idea? I’d assume it was from someone at Roon.

Can you update us?

Just for those looking for the source:

“Up to now, to stream MQA, music lovers equipped for either computer audio or network streaming have accessed Tidal Masters, which they played using the Tidal computer app or Audirvana, Amarra, Roon, Foobar, or other software. (I was told that by publication time, Roon will likely be able to unfold MQA in systems with non–MQA-decoding DACs.)”

If said writer reads these pages it is not unreasonable that he hedged his bets. This was likely written a couple of months ago and MQA has been imminent in our minds at least for the last six!
