Hi Harry,
I read today that some people use the ASIO driver with RoPieee. In my case, ROON detects my RaspberryPI as ALSA. The DAC in my Yamaha R-N1000A plays DoP and Native DSD in ASIO mode. Is it possible to add an ASIO driver to RoPieee? As far as I know, the driver for my DAC was prepared by Steinberg.
Roon detects Convert to PCM, DSD over PCM (DoP) and Initial dCS method. Can’t see Native DSD. Is it possible add Native DSD for Yamaha?
It is not. ASIO is Windows-specific. On Linux there is no need for a specific driver, but to be able to do native DSD the firmware of the USB receiver (in the Yamaha) needs to be properly working. And it’s not in this case. The only one who can fix this is Yamaha, but unfortunately most vendors ‘just don’t care’.
In general I would say: don’t overrate native DSD vs DoP: it doesn’t make any difference in sound (the DAC will get the same DSD input format). The only downside of DoP vs native DSD is the reduced bandwith: DoP requires some data overhead (it is encapsulating a DSD data stream in a PCM data stream) so you can’t get as high (in sample rate) as with native DSD.
Thank you for the information. I don’t want to switch to a new solution. Raspberry Pi is the optimal solution for me. Additionally, it does not consume much power and operates very quietly. Spockfish wrote that there is no difference in quality. I will write to Yamaha to ask them about Linux support. Their DAC definitely works with Native DSD using Windows ASIO drivers.
Keep in mind: they are 2 totally different things. The fact that it is capable of doing native DSD on Windows doesn’t mean anything. A USB DAC works completely different on Linux (and Mac for that matter) then on Windows, so ‘it’s working on Windows’ is no guarantee whatsoever.
