Yeah, Ban artist, great start. Now let's add Ban Genre

It’s exciting to see that we now have the ability to ban certain things for example if I don’t want to listen to a particular artist in any of the recommendations I can ban that artist.

I believe some people see this as a negative it has nothing to do with being negative it has to do with trying to limit down and focus on the artist and type of music that each individual person likes.

I had left Roon for several years because they were not allowing the ban function and it looks like they have made progress by allowing us to ban individual artists.

As I had asked originally several years ago I still wish to be able to ban a genre from being included.

For example a lot of people don’t like Opera so why would we include Opera in any search results if they don’t want to listen to Opera.

The same simple concept of banning an artist apply to genre would be an incredible step forward.

Keep up the great work Roon development team and just realize all of us are trying to shuffle through 44 million tracks and we have to find a way to limit somehow in order to just get to a point where we get to listen to something we want to hear.

PS: GUI suggestion, when listening to a track, give option Ban… Track, Albumn, Artist, Genre. Makes it faster than having to GO TO ALBUM or GO TO ARTIST. No reason to add those extra keystrokes.

Given Genre is highly subjective and many albums or artists cross between many or the genre associated to an album artist can just be plain wrong. Banning music this way would cause a lot of frustration for many users, when you can’t play it due to some bad metadata somewhere.

It’s important to note that anyone can play any music with or without a Ban.

My understanding is the only impact of banning something is to prevent it from being used to Auto generate playlists. Would love to also have it remove search results.

It would not be a very hard change to the user interface to check on or check off the ban feature during the search results.

That way if you’re absolutely sure you’re missing something you can turn off the ban and see all of the results.

This really is not a difficult feature to add and certainly would not confuse anybody who’s willing to spend the money on Roon.

I’d love to have bans for genre as well. I’ve got a bunch of albums of country and western that have one or two tracks of blues I like on them. My metadata is good, each track has it’s own genre listing (hoping Roon reads genre per track, if not that’s a big issue), so I shouldn’t have an issue with banning “Country” and “Western”. Then if I have friends that come over and want to hear those genre, we can still queue it up for them too. I mention this just in case someone jumps in here and says, “Don’t import music you don’t want to hear!” or similar.

I also saw in another post there was someone listening to classical piano (e.g. Debussy) but Roon radio would then jump to opera. They’d queue up more piano, then Roon would jump back to opera. It was another good example of why banning a genre would be very helpful.

Could we move this thread to the feature request section and then we can start voting for it?

I also love the idea that you could check a box when doing searches to ignore banned genres. Actually, it’d be great to have a check for “live” and “remix” albums for search results, but that’s another feature request.
