You and Roon: Monogamy or Polygamy?

Hmmmm I have a friend who IS into classical and is going to start a 1 year trial when 1.2 is released and I set it up for him. Should be fun watching him gradually decline to a quivering wreck in the corner when his tracks end up all over the place.
I thought that I was being OCD when I sorted my vinyl into strict alphabetical order. Still we all need something to drive us to distraction or life would be just to easy.

Interesting (and long) thread. Polygamist here. LMS/Squeezeboxen since the SlimDevices years. Happily jumped on Roon once they started supporting the Squeezebox as an endpoint.

On weekends I tend to keep Roon running, but during the week when life is a bit more hectic I switch back to LMS because of internet radio streaming, iPhone support and the use of the alarm functionality. I’m confident that once Roon supports all of that, I’ll switch solely to Roon. I do love the UI. But truthfully, switching between LMS and Roon is a pain and something my ever-supportive wife wants no part of. So the sooner I can switch to ONLY using Roon, the better my home life will be (no pressure, Roon Labs, just my marriage on the line here

Regarding ripping and tagging… I use EAC for ripping and preliminary tagging and MP3Tag and MediaMonkey for cleanup & comment tagging. Those tools work great so I’d far rather see Roon focus their resources & priorities on what they uniquely do best.

I was a Sooloos user and because Sooloos did not do a very good job, I had spent a lot of time grooming metadata, but it wasn’t very good, I had lots of issues. Like ā€œsorting my albums in alphabetical orderā€ – based on which name? Have to choose one, my choices were not always sensible. I was happy to abandon all that work and rely on Roon, not just because it has (mostly) better metadata, but because it eliminates the ā€œsingle key fieldā€ restriction.

So life is good. Not because I’m a laid-back hippie who doesn’t care, but because I get better results. So I’m letting go, but not of good organization, just of organizing.

That said, I don’t do much classical these days – based on the commentary here, maybe my life is easier. (Beethoven hasn’t done any new stuff in years!)

Yes, you can select all albums then go into the data preferences and say whether or not certain fields should be taken from Roon or file tags. Only certain fields. You select what you want and then it seems to work. Now you do the same thing for every new album or track you put into the library because there is no way to make the behavior general. Then you realise that Album Artist and Artist seem to mean different things and there is nowhere to determine how Roon uses Album Artist or Artist. There is almost nothing for classical music, and I am not a classical expert but the distinction of composer, conductor, soloist, orchestra - none of that is controllable. This is arcane stuff that only matters if you have built it before Roon came along.
[/quote]many of your concerns will be addressed in future releases. A little patience…

All my tagging was also meticulously done using some of the best metadata sources available over the years. Despite my best efforts Roon has exposed many holes in my tagging efforts and surfaced relationships among my albums and artists I would never have been able to without a superhuman librarian effort.

@evand Yes, I know, and I am waiting for a fresh implementation of tag management. I have no problem with the enrichment that Roon offers - only the conflict with the core tag structures, especially Genre, album art etc. As I have said, I think this is only an issue for those with large libraries from other systems, which is why tag management has not played much of a role in the polygamy games of this thread. I too would be happy in a Roon world, if I had not invested the effort and developed such an intimacy born from necessity. Meanwhile I deal with the current imperfections.

Polygamy for me - Very similar situation to @mdconnelly here - still running LMS most of the time. I’m doing a long term house restoration, and parts of my property are a bit of a building site. I tend to lash up a squeezebox/amp/speaker combo where I’m working so I have access to my full library while hitting my hand with a hammer… Therefore for me iPhone control is vital - always have the iPhone with me, not necessarily the iPad.

At weekends when doing more serious listening I’ll disable LMS and let Roon do all the driving via the iPad . So, once the Roon iPhone app is released I’ll be virtually Monogamous, with the minor exception of ripping & feeding the iPhone, which remains iTunes. This really isn’t a problem, and as others have stated, wouldn’t want the Roon guys wasting any time on replicating that functionality.

Monogamy here: RoonServer -> MS200 -> DSP5200SE’s (and a variety of AirPlay devices).

iPhone remote will be the icing on the cake.

Polygamy here . Still use Sooloos controlled by iPhone . LMS for background listening Roon for proper listening .
Until 5.1 is included Roon cannot be all-in . Too many great concerts and Dvd-As/Sacds out there .

Could dbpoweramp not be accommodated via plugin like Sooloos ? Its way ahead of Roon which could concentrate
on curating collection information .

I have been listening carefully to Aries over AES to my DAC for the last couple of days. The quality of the sound surpasses USB from the mini. I haven’t looked yet into how the USB from the Aries compares to the AES and mini, although I did do this comparison over a year ago and my impression at the time was AES was better.

I think Roon to Aries over AES is the best digital I have hear so far overall in my system.

Just my 2c before you get rid of the Aries.

Polygamy with Roon, Sonos, MinimServer or MPD (depending on where I am sitting).

Sonos for background listening or listening to Internet radio or various streaming services to which I subscribe - really, the Sonos app for browsing your library and multiple services, with integrated search, is still the experience to beat. Especially the playback model. Roon needs to fix their playback interaction model or I am finished when my subscription expires. Sorry…

At my home office desk, I am back to MPD w/ a Bryston BDP - incredible sound; I am waiting for either Roon integration (or it might get replaced).

In the living room or family room, it’s MinimServer + DLNA to inexpensive streamers (again, waiting for the dust to settle before committing one way or another). I am tired of maintaining multiple libraries, et al., so I am going to standardize on something.

LMS for several Squeezebox devices (in particular Squeezebox radios) all over the house + ROON for the living room via Mac and for another room with the best audio system via Mac and Meridian Explorer2 DAC, option to use Roon via the Squeezebox devices by means of Airplay (Shairtunes plugin in LMS)

Roon for my Meridian 861 system and LMS for my upstarirs Squeezebox Touch\Meridian F80. The latter allows for volume control over the F80 with one device. I also still use Spotify so Roon-only sytem is unlikely to be on the cards for some time

As Roon does not support mobile sync I’m forced to polygamy (Roon+iTunes).

I use JRiver when I want to hear classical box sets and see the cover art as Roon does this poorly.

I still run LMS as well as my daughter uses it in her room as its still got touch screen support for Library browsing on the Pi.

Roon only, but it’s pretty much become a point and click appliance. Data and data-related functional shortcomings have seen my interest in the UI wane significantly, exacerbated by lack of a Linux based front end. So much so, I don’t even use a tablet anymore, my smartphone suffices. Pick an album, press play or let radio take over. That’s about it.

@Tekl I use DS Audio from my Diskstation for mobile. That combined with TIDAL covers my mobile needs.

Roon Only. I have Roon, Tidal, Sonos, and Play-Fi. I just stick with the Roon app.

iTunes>>>JRiver>>>Amarra>>Pandora>>>Spotify>>>Audirvana>>>Roon+HQP+Tidal – DONE!

I know I’m quoting an old post here but what is this Audio Unit support?
