You have 6 minutes left to live - what song(s) are you listening to?

OK, I’d miss the last 49 seconds…

Most of this

Would be a tragedy to miss that last held note though.
My most played album by far.
Listened to it at least once a week since it came out.

I’d have time left to panic

Well I don’t want any time to spare so half of this would be amazing. I would be begging for a second size minutes at the end of the first half

This is really tough because many single-track pieces of music are much longer than 6 minutes. I’m, therefore, going to give two answers:

If I can only listen to one because of the six minute limitation, it would probably be A Cantus for Benjamin Britten by Arvo Part. (it’s, of course, funereal, but hauntingly beautiful)

if I can listen to snippets or shorter works, they would be:

  • The beginning of the first movement of Beethoven’s sixth symphony
  • Drume Negrita played by Leo Brouwer
  • Copland’s Billy the Kid Waltz
  • George Walker’s lyric for strings
  • Dobrinka Tabakova’s Longing from her cello concerto
  • The Promise of Living from Copland’s Tender Land
  • Mercy by Max Richter
  • Howard Handon’s Dreams from For the first time
  • Piston’s Tango of the Four Daughters from the Incredible Flutist
  • The first movement of Haydn’s 2nd cello concerto played by Queyras
  • The last couple of minutes of Mahler’s Der Abschied from the Song of the Earth (I can’t think of a more perfect musical way to go)
  • The first movement of Haydn’s hunting horn concerto (the first piece of music I fell in love with)
  • Iridescent by Linking Park
  • Tracey Chapman’s At This Point in My Life or I’m Ready
  • The Who’s Love Reign O’er Me
  • Haelos’ Dust
  • Sarah McLachlan’s Fallen
  • Stevie Wonder’s As
  • R.E.M.'s Find the River
  • After the fire written by Pete Townshend, but sung by Daltrey
  • Sixpence’s Kiss Me
  • Jill Andrew’s Rust or Gold
  • U2’s 40 (from Live at Red Rock)
  • Especially given her recent passing, Sinead O’Connor’s The Last Day of Our Acquaintance

Can I have another 6 minutes? I’ve got a few more to add

On this album
He was interviewed on bbc radio 3 when it was about to be released so I preordered it.
He was an unknown then but I loved it.
Still sticking with my pick of Eivør though.
You have a minute spare.

What a great album that is!

I’ll use my spare minute for something a little more uplifting. How about Blue Pepper from Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite?

If it’s an end of the world scenario it would definitely be this. Quietly sit down and turn up the volume, whilst watching everything fade away.

It would take me a minute to get a libation. Then I would choose Blue Jean Blues, the song that turned me on to a lifetime of glorious ‘blue’ moments.

Cheers Everyone!

6 minutes left?
Music?
You must be kidding?
Pass me the Kleenex…

But seriously folks…
I’m pretty sure I would have 5 1/2 minutes to spare so what a way to go out listening to this classic.

Edit. For those who don’t know this was written to commiserate the sad death of their drummer, The Rev.
Another criminal waste of talent.

Music? I am spending that last 6 minutes telling my wife how much I love her and how much she has meant to me over the years I have known her.
