My 2 cents - I have 4 RPi4 units running Ropieee - all hard-wired now using either MoCa or WiFi access points. The combinaion of RPi4 and Roipieee for wireless is not good at all - nothing but problems for me. Since I switched to hard-wired, no issues. Aesthetically, I would say this unit is a nice step up - RPi solutions are very geeky-looking…
I agree that the WiFi on an Raspberry Pi 4 is not the best - but under the right conditions it is still capable of delivering the performance required for a Roon Endpoint - at least with PCM sample rates up to 192kHz, 32 bit.
I ran my headphone station using RPi 4 connected by Wifi for about 3 months without issue.
However, I also agree that a hardwired connection is always preferable when practical.
A hard wired connection to a WiFi access point is only preferable to WiFi direct to the RPI4 because the WiFi Access Point antenna and radio architecture is generally much better and thus the Access Point’s link back to the primary router will be more reliable, and often higher bandwidth, than a WiFi connection direct to the RPi4. It still has all of the issue with WiFi in general.
I use two RPi4’s in wireless mode with never a problem. At home, my main listening room is WIFI from AT&T router in main bedroom to RPi4 running RoPieee in unstairs music room. I play 192/24 with no problems.
Away from home, I use Verizon cellular to an iPhone and two iPads and WIFI from them to an RPi4 running RoPieee. I use CD quality with Roon and Roon ARC when away from home to minimize cellular data usage.
What now? I’ve yet to see a USB output device that is anything other than bit perfect
The SR11 outputs a completely flawless USB signal, and is therefore identical in performance to any other high end streamer.
I think it’s a fantastic bit of kit, proper bargain Hifi. It feels well made, looks good, and operates flawlessly.
I can’t imagine a need for more!
The SR11 is a solid streamer. I have one connected to a vintage pair of Meridian 24/96 DSP speakers.
I’ve often thought about trying some classic meridian actives
I’ve been into audio gear for almost 50 years and I’ve been streaming music since 2006. I just love to sit back and watch as the high end audio industry and their willing audiophile helpers introduce patently false claim after patently false claim about why uber expensive streamers and DACs are needed. I’m pretty sure that some high end audio blowhard will tell us that the lowly SR11 produces a digital feed to the DAC that is full of electrical noise and timing errors. And then they will tell us mere mortals that only a fancy high end DAC that can filter out the electrical noise and reclock the digital signal should be used with such a non-audiophile device. Pure FUD.
Thank goodness the Chinese audio engineers base the design of their products on good, solid science and how well it sounds.
Chinese audio engineers do a grand job, but its the sub low wage assembly line builders who should be thanked.
i output my SR11 into the DAC section of a creek evo integrated… it seems to work very well
I received my SR11 (ordered from Amazon here in the US) a few days ago and set it up in my main home theater system, replacing an old Squeezebox Touch. The SR11 is connected to my network via Ethernet and I’m using the optical (digital) output going into a Marantz SR6009 HTR. The SR11 was instantly and correctly identified as a "FiiO SR11"by Roon. The SR11 works perfectly and sounds just like every other streamer I own, which means that it sounds perfect!
For anyone looking for a reasonably priced stand alone streamer (meaning no built-in DAC) that is easy to use, is Roon ready, has both WiFi and Ethernet and has USB, optical and coax digital outputs then look no further than the FiiO SR11. Great little device.
I recently bought a SR11 to replace a WiiM Mini streamer because I wanted a Roon ready device to feed our Fosi BT20A amp which drives our Polk Atrium 6 patio speakers. Since I needed to add a DAC I’m using a SMSL SU-1 that I repurposed, which also has a built-in MQA decoder. Both are running the most recent firmware. I was having issues with certain Tidal tracks bypassing the streamer’s volume control and just playing full blast, which my neighbors didn’t appreciate. Finally figured out that it was only MQA-encoded tracks causing the problem and I needed to disable MQA in Roon to fix this anomaly. Wondering if anyone else has come across this issue and whether it’s peculiar to this streamer/DAC combination. Otherwise I couldn’t be happier with the sound quality!
I purchased SR11 to upgrade my legacy system with Meridian Director& Power supply to to be Roon Ready.
My PC based Roon Server is connected to Main Router via WIFI and I found that SR11 hotspot connection is not secure. Now SR11 is connected to added Apple AirPort Express secure network via wired Ethernet cable and integrated well with Roon Server as Roon Ready device feeding the Director through S/PDIF port.
For me this solution performance is a step function above previous Chromecast and current Roon Server supported Meridian Director USB CoreAudio configurations.
I enjoy very much hearing music with my Roon Ready updated legacy and other main desktop system.
