After the last Roon update all my PL are empty

First real problem with Roon that I have been using daily for over 4 years, it was Thursday, February 20. After adding new albums I proceeded to a forced analysis of my music library.

For the very first time at the beginning of the scan appeared a furtive image with mention of services like Tidal, Qobuz or KKBOX that I do not have.

Scan result: 1731 albums

Normally in the storage directory there are 1891 albums

160 albums no longer appear in my Roon music library

System:

Roon remote control:

iMac with Sonoma (14.7)

Roon version 2.0 (build 1496)

Roon Server:

ROCK

Roon Server version 2.0 (build 1496)

Following this completely new problem of deleted albums, I was surprised to be offered an update of Roon with version 2.47 (build 1510) the next day.

Once the update was done, I immediately launched a forced scan of my music library, which allowed me to find the normal number of albums. I said to myself that the incident was over.

But the relief was short-lived since this morning Sunday February 23, when I launched Roon the entire music library had disappeared.

I closed the Roon Remote on my iMac, and then restarted Roon ROCK just in case.

Once this restart was done, I restarted Roon Remote which restarted the album scan. The scan was quite slow, but when it arrived all the albums were available again.

Nevertheless, I had a very unpleasant surprise when I found that all my Play Lists were empty. No music present, nothing more. The work of several years of use destroyed.

Do you have an explanation for this strange phenomenon?

Thank you for your feedback.

Hello again,
What’s going on with Roon updates? Because this morning once again I had a very bad surprise, all my albums disappeared from my library.
Any explanation ?
Thank you for your feedback.

Hey @Texas_tattoo,

It’s good to see you on the community again! Sorry to hear about your local library issues.

Based on your account admin, we’re currently seeing ~ 1883 local albums within your library. Could you please share a screenshot of your Roon Settings>Storage?

With that, can you also check the Roon Settings>General setting ‘Show hidden tracks and albums’ and see if it’s enabled?

How is your external drive connected to your Roon Server as well as router? Can you establish a more direct connection via ethernet while we continue to troubleshoot?

We’ll be on standby for your reply. Thank you! :+1:

Hello Benjamin,
Answer of February 25, 2025:
Yesterday morning I had the unpleasant surprise once again when starting Roon to find that my entire music library was missing, all the albums had disappeared, nothing more.
So I closed Roon and also restarted Roon ROCK.
Once this was done I restarted Roon on my iMac, and the analysis of the music library began immediately but quite slowly. At the end of this analysis, all the albums had returned, but still no Play List. All my Play Lists are empty. That’s what worries me the most. What do you think is the cause of this? Would I have a chance of finding the contents of the Play Lists?
I would like to point out that my installation has given me complete satisfaction for several years, and that I have not changed anything. I have done all the updates proposed by Roon, and that the problem encountered is very recent.

Response from February 26, 2025:
Following my problems with missing or deleted albums by Roon, I forgot to mention that during the forced analysis of my library when restarting Roon in the albums category (usually sorted by date added) I was surprised to see 4 relatively old albums appear at the top of the list whose date of addition is incorrect. These 4 albums are now in front of albums added recently, and I don’t know how to change the date of addition.

Hi @Texas_tattoo,

Thank you for the update. We’re going to need some the information @benjamin requested, however, in order to troubleshoot this situation effectively. Please provide a screenshot of your Watched Folders page in Roon and also clarify if the “Show Hidden Tracks and Albums” setting is toggled on in your Roon Settings → General page.

Diagnostics indicate that the CIFS location storing these tracks is mounted, but Roon finds the objects contained within already match file keys associated with this library. This can occur when two Watched Folders point to the same location, or if there was a failure at some point with the mounted drive, and Roon reinterprets it as a new location.

Logs provide evidence that the second case might be occurring - the ROCK itself, beneath RoonServer, reports that the CIFS drive can’t be mounted properly at intervals.

Here’s what I recommend you do:

Connect the storage location hosting your Roon library to your Mac via USB. Load the disk utility tool in Appliactions → Utilities. See if there are any errors associated with this drive - there should be a button called “First Aid.” Click this, followed by the option to “Verify Disk.” Check if the final message of the output is something like “the partition map is ok.”

This will make sure that any permissions or mount errors aren’t affecting the disk. Connect it back to your network or ROCK and restart your RoonServer to fully remount the disk.

Let us know if this helps! We’ll watch for a response. Thank you!

Thank you for your feedback. You will find attached two screenshots, first one shows the hidden albums option which is enabled, then the storage directory of my library on an SSD disk (HDD1) which is in a streamer of the CocktailAudio brand model X45. The X45 is installed in my Home Cinema system and is connected to the local network by Ethernet. Suddenly I cannot connect it by USB to my iMac to test the SSD disk with the disk utility.

Can you answer my question namely, can we modify the date of addition of an album in Roon? Because following my problems of missing albums, during a forced analysis Roon placed at the top of the list 4 old albums whose date of addition is incorrect.
I hope that this could helps.

Yes, you can, but you have to do it at track level, album per album.

Here’s how to do it:

Pick your album and select all tracks.
Go to Edit, and then select Edit Tracks (above right)

There you will see (maybe some scrolling require), Import Date, which you can adapt.

Make sure to save your changes.

Hey @Texas_tattoo,

@Dirk_De_Taey is correct in the above statement.

Outside of this, are you running into any other issues? Let us know your status! :+1:

Thank you for your feedback, but before making some changes to my albums, it occurs to me that I have already set up the backup system offered by Roon.

So it may be time to really test this possibility of finding an operational and stable system.

But for that I need your help. You will find attached 3 screenshots visible in the backups section. It turns out that I need a backup dated February 20, 2025, because it is after this date that I had problems with albums deleted from my library by Roon.

It turns out that I connected a USB key to my system quite a long time ago that contains the ROCK. In the list of directories there is of course the root folder RoonBackups, but when I click on it I get two other subfolders.

My question is where to find the backup dated February 20 in one of these subfolders? There are only numbers, but nothing explicit.

If I can restore this backup I should be able to find a stable version of Roon and with all my Play Lists that are currently empty.

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Hi @Texas_tattoo,
This image is the folder level for the backups
image
The numbered subfolders are all part of the same backup location. If you select the folder in the screenshot it will show all the sub backups.

Thank you Daniel for your feedback. This allowed me to use the backup restore option for the first time. As expected, I had to choose the February 20 backup to find a stable system before my problems with albums deleted by Roon.

I proceeded with the restoration which went smoothly. After that, I deleted the more recent backups which contained errors (missing albums and deletion of all playlists).

After restarting Roon Remote on my iPad, I immediately made a backup of the entire system with the entire playlists. I thought that was the end of the incident.

But now I am facing a new problem that was really unexpected. After restarting Roon with my iPad, I wanted to do the same with my iMac, but I could not connect to the Roon Server. The ROCK server is on and working with my iPad. The ROCK server is connected via Ethernet as well as the iMac on the same network. I have not changed anything in my installation since restoring the Roon system. I also have another problem connecting to the Roon Server with my iPhone, while it worked perfectly before restoring via WiFi.

I can’t understand why there are these connection problems with Roon.

I closed Roon, restarted Roon ROCK, and even restarted my iMac, but without success.

For the moment Roon only works with my iPad but not with my iMac or my iPhone.

Do you have any idea of the origin of these connection problems that I have never encountered before?

Thank you for your feedback.

Following up on my previous message, I would like to clarify that I am still having a problem with my iMac which cannot connect to my ROCK server.

After restoring the backup of February 20, I was able to recover all of my albums and playlists.

I could only connect to my ROCK server with an iPad via local network wifi. I could no longer connect with an iPhone, also on the same wifi as the iPad. I managed to get around this problem by deleting and reinstalling the Roon application on the iPhone. Now I can connect with the iPad and the iPhone but still not with my iMac, even though it is on the same local network.

I deleted Roon remote on the iMac, then restarted my iMac. I reinstalled Roon remote on the iMac and also restarted the ROCK server, and I even restarted my Freebox server.

But still no connection between the iMac and the ROCK server. What to do?

Hey @Texas_tattoo,

Let’s perform a full refresh of Roon on your iMac - steps to follow below:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

(this varies a bit from what you’ve attempted above)

If you still run into issues, the next place I’d investigate would be your Mac firewall - what happens if you temporarily disable it? Do you still have issues?

We’ll be on standby for your results!

Thanks again Benjamin for your support.
When you said database is it where the apps are ? In my iMac it’s called “MacOS DonnĂ©es”. After that there are 4 folders: Applications, BibliothĂšque, System and Utlisateurs. In the applications folder I found one line called Roon with the app extension is it ok for you ?
Best regards.

Hi @Texas_tattoo ,

The blue “Database Location” text from Ben’s above comment is a link to an article. The linked article describes where the database is located on a Mac (in the ~Library folder):

Hope this helps!

Thank you Noris for your support. So I looked at the article about the location of the Roon database.

In my case, with my iMac I am under masOS Sonoma and I use a ROCK server that I have assembled for more than 2 years I think.

So I did not find a Roon folder in the library, but on the other hand I do have a “Database” folder in a RoonServer folder of the ROCK.

So I wonder if it is this “RoonServer” folder that I must rename to “RoonServer_old” as suggested by Benjamin before being able to reinstall the Roon remote on the iMac?

I also specify that the firewall of the iMac is disabled.

For helping I sent 2 screenshots.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Hey @Texas_tattoo,

Not quite - you don’t want to touch anything in relation to your ROCK. We’re wanting to refresh the instance of Roon (remote) from your iMac.

Do you have Roon installed on the iMac? If so, there should be a ‘Roon’ folder within your iMac Library folder. Did you already remove this folder at a previous time? Here’s a video walkthrough of the process:

Here is the process outlined from a macOS machine (note that in the video, it replaces both the RoonServer folder and Roon folder - in your case, you only need to change your ‘Roon’ folder)

roonoldmac

Sorry Benjamin but the video is too small I can’t see anything.
In my previous message I sent you a screenshot of my iMac main library folder and there is no Roon folder. I don’t remove this folder at all.

Hello Benjamin,

It’s done, I followed your advice by doing a fresh reinstallation of Roon. I couldn’t find the library in the finder because I hadn’t done the command (alt).

Once the Roon folder was found and renamed to Roon_old, I downloaded Roon for Mac from the RoonLabs website. Once the installation was done and Roon launched and connected to the ROCK, I was pleased to see my interface reappear with my entire library.

More fear than harm, everything seems to work as before the incident. Thank you all for your support
