Apple iPad + Magic Keyboard Scrolling and Clicking Bad Behavior [Ticket In]

Roon Core

Build 1259

Connected Audio Devices

iPad Pro 11" (2018) + Magic Keyboard. iPadOS 16.4.1. Roon: Build 1259.

Description of Issue

After upgrading to the latest version, I see issues with how the Magic Keyboard interacts with Roon. It is not possible to click on menus, and the highlighting of menus is not in sync with where the marker is.

Can any other user either confirm or deny this behaviour?

Bumping this again, as it would be nice to see if it affects everyone who uses an iPad + Magic Keyboard. Also bumping to write that not only menus are affected: I can’t click on pretty much anything. Well, you can click, and see that the action happens by the menu font/play button/etc gets highlighted, but no command seem to trigger.

Also uploading two screenshots with different views, showing where the marker/pointer is and where it highlights:

I am experiencing the same problem—once the ipad keyboard is active I cannot select or play/pause from the keyboard. Normal with all other iPad apps and software up to date—though I am on iPad beta—the problem has existed for the last 2 beta releases (currently on 16.5)

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I feel a bit relieved now.

Have been surprised to not see anyone comment here and was worried this was a local issue (hard to believe that though). Maybe the user group with this combination of tools is smaller than I expected.

Same issue here. This occurs not only with the magic keyboard, but also when interacting with a docked iPad through external trackpad or mouse. In all cases, items on the Roon interface that do not respond to trackpad or mouse clicks will respond to when using one’s finger directly on the iPad screen. Overall, this suggests that the Roon interface fails to interprets external mouse/trackpad signals on docked iPads.

I am new to posting here—does anyone help us?

So far no comments or acknowledgement from Roon team that this is broken.

This is very frustrating to me—it seems to be a Roon software issue and as a software engineer I believe it should be a simple fix—its worked great for a year on the same iPad and keyboard. I do not see this problem on any other iPad app. I guess I have to keep writing you, Martin, to keep this thread open.

I’m an iPad Pro M1 user and can confirm the same behavior. In fact, Roon does not register any clicks via the Magic Keyboard and things start to glitch out on my external monitor when I have Roon open and try to click around.

Hopefully, Roon takes a look at this soonish!

Still broken in Roon Remote (iOS) 2.0 (build 1271).

I am also on 2.0 version 1271 on Roon Remote and 1272 on my Roon server (M1 Mac Mini). When I use Roon I remove the keyboard because this Roon bug interferes with normal use of Roon on the iPad.

Hi All,

Thanks for the reports here. We checked on our end, but our M1 iPad Pro is working as expected with the Magic Keyboard we have in the testing lab. Can you share any more details regarding your setups? Do you have any kind of additional USB docks or how is the keyboard connected?

Did this issue start only after updating the iPad iOS version to beta? @Martin_Friberg - Are you also running beta?

Hello @noris, awesome to see you here.

No beta for me. 2018 iPad Pro 11”, the Magic Keyboard for iPad. Always running the latest official iPadOS version.

I have not connected this with iPadOS, but with the Roon version where Fluency was introduced. Issue appeared the day I did that update. This thread was started on the day of that release:
https://community.roonlabs.com/t/roon-2-0-15-and-arc-1-0-36-are-live/240337/3

Disheartening that you can’t see this on your lab equipment. First I thought this was isolated to me, as I heard no other reports, but when even Bluetooth connected peripherals showed the same, I thought it was much more widespread.

Mine is an iPad Pro M1 and I have been on Beta since I bought it a year ago. Roon worked fine all year then maybe 2 or 3 months ago the keyboard issue started. I decided to wait for software updates to both roon and iPadOS before taking any action. I’m contemplating moving to the Public release (removing beta) but Martin is not on beta so I’m not sure it’s worth the effort.
Advice appreciated.

Hey @David_ONeill,

Can you provide more details around this process? Do you have the onscreen keyboard option enabled on the iPad?

After restarting everything, does the issue occur immediately when opening/using Roon?

If by chance you’re able to share a screen recording of this issue happening, that would be helpful as we’re still unable to reproduce this on our end. Thanks!

This shows the keyboard cursor working at the top level of roon but as soon as i go to “Home” the cursor is displaced and no clicks are accepted.

I’m not sure this will send properly—first-timer with screen record

Just a thought is anyone using any zoom or larger/smaller text setting?

I think this will work to replace my failed effort above.
Thanks

Outstanding! Yes, I had a zoom setting—now back on standard and my problem is solved.
Thanks all for the time.
