Apple Music High Res

Do you update to a new IOS Apple Music app on iPhone?

No as I mentioned a few posts above, it is rolling out for existing iOS 14.6

It just appears.

Try a reboot. If it’s still not there, you’ll just have to be patient as it’s rolling out

I was on 14.5. Updating to 14.6 now. Thanks.

Jim, goto “settings > music”, click “audio quality”, and enable lossless.

It still may not be there for you after you update but getting 14.6 is essential

I am not seeing that because I was still on 14.5. Updating to 14.6 now. Thanks.

Today lossless music streaming (minimum CD quality) has taken the first step to being ‘mainstream’.

Sure Amazon Music HD came first (of the big playaz) but it was in only 4 countries until recently and still only 7.

What a time to be alive.

The heck? How are we supposed to take advantage if it doesn’t switch sample rates automatically resulting in an other than bit-perfect playback? :man_facepalming:t2:

Anyway, does choosing lossless quality apply to local files saved in itunes as well? (I guess not since there is no sample-rate switching yet)…

How does downloading work in macOS? Do the downloaded files appear with the local files as well in the same directory?

As I wrote, this was kind of expected (to me anyway).

iTunes/Apple Music on macOS has had this issue for years, with local hi-res content too.

Lossless streaming has been pushed out early to get a head start on Spotify HiFi…

So I expect proper auto sample rate switching later. Maybe next macOS version end of the year.

And new hardware (eg headphones) will come out to take better advantage

Remember this is a free update for existing Apple Music customers, so the complaints need to be put in perspective lol

Yes see my screenshot I shared earlier.

Yes, points taken thanks!

I’m now playing lossless Apple Music on my iPad. My iPhone doesn’t give me the option yet.

No such option :man_shrugging:t2:

Edit: iPad does, iPhone not yet

Try to activate/deactivate some options in Music settings: in my case it popped out. On Mac it helped to turn off VPN (if you’re using one).

Turn flight mode on and off (or network off/on), it’ll pop up.

Thanks both of you. In fact it took a removal to finally show the lossless option. Mysteries of high tech …

Hey! What do you mean bei “does not switch automatically”? So you play a song with 96 and it just bringst 44,1 to the DAC?

How do you see the correct rate on iOS via roon? Roon just uses iOS as RAAT-receiver and does not use the Music app for playback.

How is Tidal or Qobuz on MacOS not switching? I remember, my Chord Mojo switched color (though, I have to check in a few minutes on Apple Music).

I mean, there would be no reason to roll-out high-res, if it ends up delivering 24/48 not even bitperfect to DACs on MacOs.

Maybe I miss a point here and there, just a newbie ;). Thanks in advance!

Update: I checked on my Mojo… Indeed … the indicator shows “green”, which is 96 … i does not matter if I play something below, it does not change by switching from lossless to hi-res-lossless.

I haven’t found a 192 file yet. So it’s not bit-perfect. Maybe the result depends on the upsampling method, but there should be at least an option.

I guess apple will look into is, they are new to the lossless game. Maybe we will get a direct option too.

Hi Doc

See this post above

I don’t follow? This entire thread is about Apple Music app, nothing to do with Roon ?

My comment was about Apple Music app. Of course Tidal and Qobuz (and Roon) apps on macOS all feature ‘Exclusive Mode’ so not an issue.

Ah! Sorry, I mixed up some things in your post (and made the check with Mojo meanwhile).

I guess, I got confused by

No issue on iOS - auto sample rate switching has been working for years already on iOS. Easy to verify with Roon, Tidal and Qobuz apps on iOS.

somehow (not your fault  )… because you mentioned other apps and switching, but it seems to be a problem with music-app only. That’s why I asked about roon in that context. Roon being able to switch rates in iOS as an outpoint does not testify anything about the music-app.

No problem. My fault for causing the confusion.

So what I meant was iOS music apps have been capable of working in a type of ‘Exclusive Mode’ for years (like with Roon, Tidal, Qobuz apps). Basically audio is exclusive to those music apps until a phone call comes in.

So it’s no surprise Apple Music app on iOS also supports auto sample rate switching today.

But Apple Music app on macOS has the same issue as iTunes previously and doesn’t currently feature auto sample rate switching. But I expect that will change with a future update. Until then you need to manually change sample rate in Audio MIDI app on macOS. Or just play everything at one fixed sample rate (whatever you pick in Audio MIDI app).

Wondering if the Monterey beta available for developers has introduced some changes in Audio MIDI Setup giving Macs finally an automatic sample rate switching.
