Apple TV3 as an endpoint

I have a used Apple TV-3. I bought it used on eBay since it was cheap and since it had an optical TOSLINK output (the 4K model Apple TV-4 lacks this output).

Initially, Roon server (on my Mac mini) saw the Apple TV and I was able to stream music from Roon through the Apple TV.

Then I tried to set up the Apple TV to use as a video device. Since I tried, my Roon server no longer sees the Apple TV at all! I’ve tried fiddling around with settings on the Apple TV itself, but I’m still unable to access the Apple TV as a Roon destination (the server just doesn’t see it anymore).

Since I know this CAN work, what must I do to restore the Apple TV to service as a Roon destination?

Thanks - Glenn

You might try power cycling your router.

Try this;

I have tried the following:

  1. Disconnecting the Apple TV from the internet and then resetting it. This allowed me to set up my username/password/Apple ID, but Roon still doesn’t recognize it.

  2. Setting up an AirPlay password. This did not work either; Roon still doesn’t see the Apple TV at all.

  3. Taking the Apple TV to the local Apple Store for help. The salesperson there said that my Apple TV seemed to be working fine, but since it was an obsolete product, the store lacked the software to run a full diagnostic.

So I’ve got nothing. Roon no longer sees my destination. Any other thoughts?

Hi @Glenn_Young,

Thanks for writing in, and an interesting issue you have here!

A few questions for you - does the Apple TV3 work as an endpoint with other streaming services? Are you only seeing this issue in Roon?

How is the TV connected to your router, as well as to your Mac mini running Roon Server? I’d give your router a reboot as well as your Mac mini, and leave both unplugged for a few minutes before powering back up.

If no luck after that, let’s see if refreshing your RAAT Server database may help.

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder
