Apple Watch support - Roon App

+1 please add this feature - it would really improve my experience of the app and service and I am sure the same goes for the rest of the community

Hi getting my iPhone to show up as a device seems hit and miss…

Also I got in a mess with fixed volumes and things I wasn’t able to group…

Help please!

Interested? @DrCWO and i might soon release our Apple Watch standalone App as part of rooExtend https://rooextend.com:

Started my Roon trial two months ago - now I am totally addicted. Great system, cool GUI.
But why not add a simple watch functionality too? Spotify has a neat little player control - it saves having to find and log on to the mobile phone or laptop to skip or adjust volume etc.
Add me to the list of supporters for a Roon-watch function!!

Same here!!

Apple Watch controls are here with the new release of Roon. Just update your core and Roon remote app on your iPhone and activate Lock Screen controls in settings/setup.
This is a big deal so a big thank you goes out to the Roon team!
(This is not in the release notes so maybe they didn’t even realize that Lock Screen controls mean that controls are also available on Apple Watch?)

I just noticed that today after I upgraded. It’s a great feature and very convenient when my wife wants to chat!

This is so great. I’ve been waiting for Apple Watch controls for years. Thanks Roon!

Edit. Maybe I spoke too soon. The first Message I received killed the controls on the watch and phone, so I couldn’t pause or lower volume.

Thanks so much for the heads up, @DanMtsn ! Yeah, I searched the release notes and see nothing about it, either, but I’ll gladly take it. I’ve been trying it out the past few days and it’s been working wonderfully! Although I did have to make one additional setting change to increase stability (see below). Something that at least one person in this thread had also hoped for was volume control via the crown and that capability is there, too.

@Ultrarunner , I found that I had to change the Banner Style setting under Notifications from Temporary to Persistent in order for the Roon controls to remain and operate more consistently in the iOS lock screen as well as on Apple Watch. (From the Roon settings under iOS Settings, not within Settings of the Roon app itself.) It seems that on the default Temporary setting, Roon would drop from the lock screen as well as from Apple Watch under certain circumstances, e.g. receiving a phone call, although not every time in my testing at least. (I never ran into the same issues as you as a result of receiving texts.) The Persistent Banner Style Notifications setting seems to have stabilized both the Roon lock screen and Apple Watch controls for me over the past couple of days but YMMV. Having said that, even with Notifications set to Persistent, volume controls from the iOS lock screen and Apple Watch were lost after receiving a phone call. Changing the volume from the Roon app itself restored volume control to both the iOS lock screen control as well as Apple Watch. While volume control is nice, it wasn’t part of the original feature request. But the good news is that it seems loss of volume control are equally effecting both the iOS lock screen and Apple Watch and since iOS lock screen control is officially supported, I anticipate that any fixes for the lock screen will fortuitously impact Apple Watch control, too.

@vova , as far as I’m concerned as the op, Roon has delivered on this feature request in its entirety. Given that it appears to come as an unintentional bonus with the official delivery of Roon controls from the iOS Lock Screen, are the same Roon controls from Apple Watch a feature that you’d consider officially supporting going forward as well?

Thanks!

Where does one enable Roon functions on iPhone control center? I’m on an iPhone 7+ and access control center under settings-control center, but I see no Roon related functions to add for control. JCR

@Jeffrey_Robbins , to enable the Roon Lock Screen controls, you’ll do that within the Roon app itself in iOS. In the Roon app, click the menu (hamburger) icon in the top left corner, then Settings, then the Setup Tab, then “Enable Lock Screen controls (beta).”

Additional info:

Yes, got it! And for Apple Watch, should I enable persistent banner style for the Lock Screen and I need not check either notifications or banners? JCR

Well, the Persistent Banner Style selection is still anecdotal at this point. It seems to have helped me with both the iOS Lock Screen and the Apple Watch with no downside so I’m keeping it that way. I just left all three selections checked since they were that way by default but yes, the Lock Screen selection would be the important one.

Has anyone been able to work out a solution to controlling volume from the watch? Sometimes I am able to control Roon volume from the watch, sometimes not at all and some other times there seems to be a range that I can control but not full (I can turn it down to a certain level then it hits the minumum on the watch but the volume is not at minimum… I hope I am making sense  )

I +1 this!

@Klaus_Engel @DrCWO : any news?

Hi Volker,
rooWatch is just around the corner

We plan to start a beta-tester-Program at the beginning of next week and officially release the rooWatch App at beginning of February. It first has to be approved by Apple.

To get Beta-Tester you need to have a Raspberry Pi with rooExtend on it and an Apple Watch.
If you fulfil these requirements You can send me PM if you are interested.

We will provide a Beta Release of rooExtend for testing and the App for the Watch via the Testflight App. You have to install it on your iPhone to push rooWatch on your Apple Watch.

Best DrCWO
