To expand on this, since using Roon again and Arc I’ve noticed my iPhone 16 Pro Max is getting pretty darn warm during Arc use and to the point of too hot during downloads. I would say it is worse now than I’ve experienced before.
This is on WiFi at home and also 5G mobile network with good strength and download speeds.
Downloads are also taking twice as long as other solutions.
Example. I’ve recently downloaded a couple of albums for on Arc on a good 5G connection. The phone within seconds was getting warm with little progress showing on the download status circle. By the end of the download the phone was much warmer than it should be and this is in an air conditioned vehicle at less than 20C.
I allowed the phone to cool down. Downloaded the same albums on PlexAmp, same Opus 256kbps. Took less time and the phone barely got warm.
I see in the EA release notes for 1536/358 that a warning message is being introduced to warn of the device getting hot. This isn’t a fix. I know the phone is getting hot, I’m holding it
Please can the developers look into the cause of this overheating.
Playback temperatures are also higher that other options in the same environment and setup type.
Also, Roon Server and Plex Server are running on the same machine pulling from the same USB attached SSD’s for music.
So on my iPhone for playback it would appear Muse is causing the heat issue with my earbuds. I believe this to be the case as PlexAmp in comparison, which is Opus 24/48 also, with downloads isn’t creating the same level of heat.
Via carplay which is 24/48 there is still a noticeable heat issue with Arc over PlexAmp.
It’s a relatively thin plastic case. Adds minimal bulk and nonalcoholic protection. I also do not use a screen protector. I have tested without the case as well.
Yes, the same amount from the same source files in the same format. Plex is quicker and results in less heat. Arc is slower and produces more heat.
Both the above apply to my Android phone.
I’ve moved over to a Roon Rock install from a DietPi install for testing purposes and the same experience is occurring with the phones.
Whilst it’s not a wanted side effect, Arc works and does its job. I haven’t seen the new over heating message though, so either my phone isn’t getting hot enough or it just isn’t popping up. I’ll test again now.
Downloading 11 Chemical Brother albums &16:17 UK time. The iPhone is not on charge and. It connected via CarPlay nor playing music. I’m also on mobile data on a very good 5g connecting. In the same place as when I opened this support thread.
I am seeing this issue as well both on cellular, and local wireless network. For me, to reproduce it simply turn on Smart Downloads. No case on my iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18.5.
Also running:
Roon/RoonServer 2.52 (build 1538) Production & Roon ARC 1.67 (build 360) Production
@Mr.Flibble I just tested it on my device, and the issue is still occurring with Download quality Balance and Original Format.
The latest fix didn’t contain any direct refactoring to downloads, but it did contain incremental improvements to background efficiency.
The major change is that downloads now pause (and resume) automatically when the OS reports high thermal status to ARC. If the app is foregrounded, you’ll see the banner notification. In the background, downloads will simply “slow down.” What’s interesting here is that you had the screen open and never encountered any thermal warnings in the app, but the phone stayed cool. This might have more to do with the background efficiency changes.
In any case, we’d like to keep this thread open for several days. Should the weather turn on your download experiences, we’d like to investigate.
I don’t believe in coincidences normally, but I’d say any changes the Devs did has made a big difference for me. Gets warm as I would expect, but no as hot as it was when I created this support thread. Happy for the thread to be closed.
