Archaeology ;-) - Pi 2B with RoPieee v352

Hello all.

Just opened a old box of Pi bits, to discover a Pi 2B 1Gb / HiFiBerry DAC+ with a microSD still in.

Fired it up, found the DHCP server gave it an IP, and reports v352 and dated 20190831-1

So, my real questions, is there anyway to run the current version of RoPieee on a Pi 2B? Or do I need to move the HAT onto a 4 or 5?

Thanks for any help.

Ropieee no longer supports Pi2.

You should be able to move your HAT to a newer Pi, but you should check compatibility.

Some HATs have problems with Pi4/5.

You can still buy Pi3s if you need to.

Thanks

Was almost guessing that would be the answer, when I saw the list of download images for RoPieee.

Now to figure out if I use a 4B with 4Gb that I have, or buy a 5/2Gb as I need a new case for whatever runs the HiFiBerry HAT.

And already have a nice heatsink case for the 4 to use that for other things.

Sorry, it has a HiFiBerry Digi B+ HW 1.0 HAT, not the DAC+

You could perhaps ask Hi Fi Berry about compatibility, but I know they needed to change drivers for the Pi5, so my guess the Pi4 (or Pi3) is a safer bet.

Given you have a Pi4 on hand, I’d be tempted to try it (uncased) and see if it works.

It it does it looks like Hi Fi Berry are still selling Pi4 cases.

Yep, I see that The Pi Hut do HiFiBerry cases for both the 4 and 5, both are £33.50

I can pick up a 5/1Gb for £43.20, and just use that for RoPieee / Roon.

That then means I have my 4B/4Gb, and a very nice PiMoroni purple heatsink case for it, for experimentation. It seems that the colour anodised cases are no longer available, which seems a shame.

Have to say, after not looking at Pi stuff for a while, that a 4B/4Gb is now £96, and the 5 ranges from £43.20 all the way to £292.80. The price of RAM seems to have made Pi pricing and availability rather nuts.

Please check your hat works before buying the 5, there were some compatibility issues, it isn’t a 100% safe bet!

Oh man… that’s really loooong ago. So cool it still runs

Cheers @GregD I think what I’ll do is run it with the Pi 4B/4Gb with the Digi+ hat bare first (have got it to the point that it is running RoPieee) so now to connect it to a DAC.

If that all works, I’ll probably grab another 4B, but maybe with 1Gb or 2Gb, as they are £33.60/£52.80, as well as the HiFiBerry case.

That should give me a few years use before the 4B is no longer supported.

@spockfish Yep, parked it in a box in storage for a while, so dragged it out and fired it up. Cheers for all your efforts.

Good plan.

I had an Allo Katana running on a Pi2 and replaced it a while back when @spockfish did a major upgrade and stopped supporting the Pi2.

The Katana had known problems on the Pi4 but has been happily running on a Pi3.

I think for a lot of uses the Pi5 isn’t better. Roon Bridge certainly doesn’t need the power.
