Hi, I consider buying SP2000T to be used with Roon within my house. Can anybody tell about such experience? Is it good, comparing to a big component setup for the same price? I know Roon doesn’t “like” WiFi very much, preferring wired connection, so how does SP2000T handle Roon over WiFi? Also, in the Roon list of Roon-ready devices SP2000T is noted as (possible) having limited quality capacity due to Android restrictions. Is it an issue? Thanks!
The issues they mention are not sound quality it’s Android not being good sync wise if grouped with other RAATzones. I had the A&K Kann Alpha for a week it’s was not worth the money in my opinion. They use older wifi tech that’s not very resilient although some users have been lucky other not. For me it just lost connection to the core constantly and even close to the ap would give poor performance where cheaper components worked flawlessly. It’s not a case of Roon not liking WiFi as that’s just not true. I run most of my zones wireless with no problems , wireless core is where things go to pot with Roon more often. The 2000 is the top tier DAP and does have dual band WiFi so likely more stable than the entry level Kann I tried. Personally though I didn’t think sound quality is that amazing that it warrants 3x the price of a DAP that works perfectly over wireless. Yes they have RAAT and bypass the usually Android caveats of resampling but it’s not a premium experience which it should be given the price of the components. Your far better buying a more dedicated no portable solution for a better headphone experience and this can be achieved for far less.
How long ago did you have the Kann Alpha? AK released a firnware update a few weeks ago that addresses a number of wifi stability issues and wifi has been rock solid since the firmware update. Never have any dropouts with Roon and use almost daily.
Autumn last year, the other issue I forgot was battery life, which was not anywhere near what they advertised. That I do put down to Roon as it’s so active all the time unlike local playing software on the device. I returned it after a week it just wasn’t worth it over the Hiby DAP I already owned.
Do you use Roon on your Hiby? Which model is it?
I do it’s just the Android app same as on phones so it does resample if above 44.1/24 on my DAP as Roon insists on resampling via the Android app for comparability reasons. Still sounds pretty good though. Any Andorid DAP with play store can install the Roon app as long as it’s support Open GL3 the UI needs. Mines the R5 gen 1. But I use the local SD card in most scenarios as it’s mainly used away from home, Roon I use when gardening and cleaning. I got the A&K for home office use and the bedroom but the small desktop systems I use in these rooms already where better and work flawlessly so again it was just not worth it.
